I’m bringing this feature back by popular demand (I didn’t get a single email!) since I know deep down inside you agree that “Apple wants it’s screensaver back” Doctor Who and “You call this eyesore an American treasure!?” Fresh Prince deserved Worst Show Opening accolades.

For those not familiar with the term, “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” is a term coined by film reviewer Nathan Rabin in 2007 for a type of character we all know well.
She is generally petite, attractive, high on life, playful, prone to quirky antics and shenanigans, maybe minor crime that doesn’t hurt no-one, and will inevitably be obsessed with teaching a more straight-laced, brooding male character to “loosen up a little”, “be free”, “be happy” or similar. They probably “meet cute” early in the work, too.

Well hello there my droogs. As promised, and because you’ve been such good little nerds and nerdettes, I’ve collected up bits and pieces of news that came out of Comicon this weekend. But wait, there’s more! I couldn’t just start up a weekend edition that was more of the same great article you receive during the week. What fun would that be? So, let’s give a hearty NNR welcome to the brand new TV section! Considering all the sci-fi and fantasy programming hitting the airwaves this fall, it only makes sense. This weekend, Snow White gets serious, The Man In Black voices his concerns, Cable isn’t dead and a horror icon returns in this special Weekend Edition of the Nerd News Roundup!
A new season of Celebrity Rehab premiered on Sunday night featuring the likes of Michael Lohan and Bai Ling. Train wreck, right? Probably, but with the return of Steven Adler, one of the more relatable and heartbreaking cast members to appear on the show, it shows some promise too. Those extremes of the fame whores you love to hate vs the fallen celebrity you feel sorry for are what keep me coming back for more.
Reality TV is nothing without the epic battles that show the absolute worst of humanity. After all, as we all know, whether they’re Real Housewives or Top Chef wannabes, they’re not there to make friends. Continue reading
As an “old,” it increasingly takes a lot more effort to make me go “squee!” over something. So when I learned the Hub Network has started re-airing episodes of “Jem,” an involuntary “squee!” emanated from yours truly.
Back in the ’80s, Saturday morning cartoons were the thing to do and at 11AM on NBC, I made sure to be front and center for my weekly dose of Jem & the Holograms, a multi-racial, technologically-advanced girl band whose lead singer could change persona — the headstrong Jerrica Benton and the rock star, Jem — thanks to “magic” earrings acquired from a hologram, better known as Synergy. Oh, sure. Most of you are at the beach, dancing on the sand and drinking pina coladas and listening to the Beach Boys and feasting upon hot dogs and chips. But the news? The news never takes a vacation. Even on Memorial Day. Continue reading
Some stars have all the luck. Take Damon Wayans, Jr.: He was poised an ready to star in a new pilot that actually got picked up, when–oh no!–the show he’s already starring in also got picked up. Or H. Jon Benjamin, whose lead voice work on not one but two animated shows will be continuing to echo through living rooms across America for yet another year. Continue reading
Well, now what is this? Little Bran is walking? So all that unpleasantness with him climbing a wall and witnessing two blond full-blooded maniacs rutting like common conjoined wombats didn’t actually happen? And the blondest of the two, and also the one filled with increasing crazy-juice, didn’t just toss the boy out a window like a stale mug of ale? Why no, of course this all happened. It’s just a nice little ploy that many a television show uses to get you to wonder if things are really real, or if everything is just some mystical dream. Sorry, though, Game of Thrones; unless Bobby Ewing appears in a shower I’m not falling for that again. No sir.
