I’m bringing this feature back by popular demand (I didn’t get a single email!) since I know deep down inside you agree that “Apple wants it’s screensaver back” Doctor Who and “You call this eyesore an American treasure!?” Fresh Prince deserved Worst Show Opening accolades.
But let’s not dwell on the unpleasant realities of life, lemmings. (Too harsh? Not harsh enough?) Instead, let’s celebrate the best show openings television has to offer us!
1. The Muppet Show
Maybe it’s all the method acting, but the Muppet Show’s opening is a delicious feast for both the ears and the eyes.
2. It’s Garry Shandling’s Show
The opening credits of the Garry Shandling’s Show perfected the art of ridiculing the expository theme tune.
3. Six Feet Under
I cried from beginning to end upon first viewing. The opening credit flawlessly captured the spirit of the show and prepared me for the ensuing heartbreak each episode was going to reveal.
4. The Addams Family
Any theme song that encourages me to snap along automatically wins in the battle of life.
5. Law and Order: All of Them
There is something terribly addictive about the Law and Order openings. Clang Clang.
6. The Cosby Show
Thursday’s remain my favorite day of the week and The Cosby Show (especially its creative openings) may have played a role.
7. Twin Peaks
Remember the scene where Laura’s father adjusts his tie in the living room mirror to have Bob’s face (BOB’S FACE!) reflected back? Did you cry and scream with terror? Luckily, the sublime cinematography of the opening credit lulled me into a warm and happy place.
8. Welcome Back, Kotter
There’s a reason this theme song went number 1 on the charts, it’s perfect.
9. A Different World
Irrespective of the fact that American student loans are likely to top a trillion dollars this year, I’d still want to attend Hillman College. That, and the never-to-be-matched voice of Aretha Franklin.
10. Kids in the Hall
Oh, Toronto, you’re all pretty and nostalgic in black and white.
11. The Golden Girls
For seven years we were treated to the hilarious antics of four single elderly women and not a sole episode featured a cat. REFRESHING! Crass sisters (and MonkeyBiz) take note! Now, let’s sing along to one of the most iconic theme song openings.
12. Dexter
Dexter’s opening should win every single award imaginable as it perfectly illustrates the potential horror lurking beneath everyday routines.
13. 30 Rock
Exceedingly short, colourful, and infectious. Well done, Tina Fey’s husband and some editor, well done.
14. Today’s Special
What’s not to love about department-store dwellers? Today’s Special was a Canadian gem and the opening credits proved it every single time.
15. Laverne & Shirley
What is it with the Laverne & Shirley opening where I want to wax poetically on behalf of Marxist-feminism? Instead, let’s watch Penny Marshall come out of the closet at the 30 second mark.
