Less Content + Higher Prices = People Leaving Netflix

Netflix recently changed its pricing scheme so that those who want both streaming and disk delivery will be charged up to 60% more per month. The accountants at Netflix saw streaming usage and content acquisition costs going up and needed to offset those costs with higher revenues. In what surely could not have been unforeseen consequences a loss of distribution deals at the same time as a price hike has caused some customers to reevaluate their options.

Craigslost: Seeking a Platonic Spanking Bud

Hello kiddies. I see you’ve come back for more carnival of horrors. Apparently the JO Knifefights didn’t scare you off. (They should’ve.)

Well over the past few days I received a bunch of new Craigslost submissions from some of my favorite people in the world: Dancing Queen, BoobooKitteh, SusanBAwesome, GenderFenderBender and the inimitable Slim Pickens all sent me this week’s craziest free classified ad crap. So sit back, pour yourself a glass of leprechaun blood and admire the Hieronymous Bosch-ian tableau of nihilistic perversion and insanity that is Craigslist.

Vaccine Triumphs Over Polio in India

Polio was one of the most feared diseases of the 20th century.  In 99% of cases, it causes no symptoms or very mild symptoms and may go effectively unnoticed, making it easy for people to be unwitting carriers and spreaders of the virus and leading to an explosion of polio epidemics in the early 20th century as transport improved, population density in cities increased and it became easier for a virus like polio to reach a critical mass of people.  Meanwhile, in that last 1% of sufferers polio infects the spinal cord, leading to paralysis or death.  Even worse, young children tends to be particularly susceptible, leading to polio becoming known in some areas as infantile paralysis disease.  There is still no known cure for polio.

In 1952 in the United States alone, polio caused 3,145 recorded deaths and 21,269 recorded cases of mild to disabling paralysis.

DRM Only Hurts Legitimate Paying Customers

I’m sure most people are familiar with the ubiquitous set top box lounging around or near their television eating around 19 volts and putting off quite a bit of heat. Most people probably figure these are just part of the package with having cable service. A necessity that we’ve all come to terms with. Well not me. I stood up and challenged the system. I wanted something better for my house. Will no one rid me of these turbulent devices? Continue reading

Yahoo Fires CEO by Telephone, CEO Fires Back

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz was fired yesterday afternoon by Yahoo’s board. Apparently not wanting to deal with her in person, they did it by telephone. They did not think to have her company email privileges disabled first. It is a credit to Ms Bartz that her retaliation was relatively- relatively– low key. She immediately sent an email to the mailing list for all Yahoo staff worldwide, as follows after the jump: Continue reading

Ten Truly Horrible Facebook Pages

Facebook is ubiquitous. Even your grammy has had an account for two years and the site has become a standard staple in any marketing plan. Of course, it is this widespread use that makes Facebook so damn handy. You can find a FaceBook page for any interest or group, no matter how obscure.

However, this also means that there are some sick fucks and general jack asses who also populate the Facebook universe. Stupidity, bigotry, bad taste; Facebook has it all. I am going to spare you the chore of searching for it yourself, and give you a sampling of some of the worst Facebook has to offer. Continue reading
