Greetings from Gilead – Texas Introduces Fetal Heartbeat Abortion Bill

On Thursday, July 18, Governor Perry signed into law HB2, the bill that would ban abortion in Texas after 20 weeks. The bill would also require all clinics that provide abortion to be upgraded to surgical centers, and would require doctors who perform the service to have admitting privileges to hospitals within 30 miles. The bill was specifically designed to set standards that were impossible to meet in the designated timeframe (September 2014) which means that all but 5 clinics that provide abortions—one of their many services in regards to women’s healthcare—will have to shut their doors. The Day Wendy Davis, “One-Woman Filibusterer,” Came to the Texas Anti-Abortion Rodeo

All she had to do was stand and discuss abortion for 13 hours. That’s right. That was all. A daunting task by no stretch of the imagination. But this national hero took the challenge head on. Wearing a back brace and pink sneakers, Texas State Senator Wendy Davis decided that she would stand up for women’s rights, literally. She would tell their stories to a waiting congress poised to shut her down for any tiny infraction. And she did so yesterday in a 13-hour filibuster to stop a Republican produced anti-abortion bill. By the Time You Read This

By the time you read this, it won’t really make a difference. Tomorrow, I will kill what some people would consider to be my unborn child. To me, tomorrow marks the day that I get rid of a parasite. Is that inflammatory to say? Yes, of course it is. I know it is. But for me, at this point in my life, this thing that has taken residence inside of me is not even a fetus as of yet—it’s just an unwanted little creature that has taken control of my body without my permission.

Sure, you could say that by having sex, I gave control of my body over to Mother Nature, but the truth is that this can happen to anyone no matter how safe you are. It doesn’t matter if this was the result of having tons of sex with my boyfriend or a couple of one night stands in the past couple of months—the numbers game remains the same no matter what your relationship status is, and Mother Nature doesn’t give a shit about how many sexual partners you have when you’re fertile. A Rebuttal to “15 Things to Consider about Abortion”

January 22 marked the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. It was also National Sanctity of Human Life Day, something Ronald Reagan started in 1984 to combat the decision regarding Roe. Or something.

"Get out of my womb, Piper"
This guy wants in your womb.

Pastor John Piper, of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, took it upon himself to publish a list of 15 things we should all consider before we get abortions. Though one of our very own already eloquently summed up what was wrong with the article (“1/3 of it is religious and not everyone follows your narrow interpretation of religion, 1/3 of it is flat out lies, and 1/3 of it is Fuck You Asshole”), we are going to go a little more in-depth with our analysis.

Let’s get started. Continue reading

Akin, Ryan, and Walsh, the “No Exceptions” Anti-Abortion Crusaders

Just when you think the Republicans have learned their lesson when it comes to speaking about all the mystical goings on inside enchanted lady-wombs, here they go again, proving that they should just come forth and say that they really believe magic storks should bring babies down from Heaven or Nova Scotia, or Xanadu, whatever. Women, yeah, you need not apply. Continue reading

Mitt Romney Shakes His Etch-A-Sketch On Abortion

Now that we can hopefully move on from Mitt Romney’s explosively devoid of truth debate performance where he conjured a look-a-like hopped up on aggressive position-shifting jujubes to great success, let’s all continue to focus on what has become the new face of the man. That face is still carved in an Etch-A-Sketch. The latest showing, his miraculous new position on abortion he laid out late Tuesday. Are we still going to call this a success? Continue reading

The GOP Keeps Talking About Rape, Proves How Little They Care

You just have to wonder what the GOP endgame is here. Is it that rape/abortion has become such a big ditch that they are compelled to keep digging with hopes on settling on the right answer, but (double drat!) what they’ve ended up with is such a continuing cycle of ignorance, offensiveness, and smug assholery that they’ve really got no clue how to stop looking for the saving grace as desperation sets in? It would sure seem that way. Continue reading

The G-OPP and The Radical Right’s Overton Window Push on Abortion

It’s no secret that the self-proclaimed Party of Liberty seems to take great interest these days in what happens in the realm of OPP-Other People’s (insert your usage for P here, we’ll go with ‘Pants’ in the name of decency). Whether it’s their stance on DADT, gay marriage or a women’s right to choose, the modern Republican Party really, really needs to know what’s going on down there, and put a hard stop to it if said goings-on fail their purity tests.
