There Will Be Tears: Liveblogging Project Runway Episode 7!

So here we are. Week seven. Do you care about any of these goblins? Are you rooting for anyone? I’m not, and I don’t. This has been one of the weakest seasons of Project Runway to date, wouldn’t you say? Still, it’s pretty entertaining television, and the judges are a three ring circus unto themselves. Tonight the design goblins will be working in groups again, and that’s always a recipe for friendly cooperation and smiles.

No it’s not, but I don’t really need to explain that to you because you’ve seen it all before, and this season is shuffling along its predetermined path like an obedient automaton in a chiffon robe. The breakdowns are becoming more epic, the bitchery more spectacular. Continue reading

NFL Opening Night Liveblogkkake

AMERICAN FOOTBALL IS BACK, DICKWAGONS. That means hard hitting, butt slapping, 3-4 defense, butt slapping, zone blocking, butt slapping, dreadlocks and butt slapping! After a bitter lockout and frenzied free agent season, the NFL kicks off (Wordplay, yo) the 2011 season with the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers defending their cheese-encrusted tundra against the New Orleans Saints.

The NFL is the epitome of American culture. There is nothing subtle or muted about the sport. Every play is celebrated with a dance no matter the context, the pregame shows are packed with fake, unfunny jocks in their 40s. The owners and networks rake in billions of dollars in profits, yet the only people to catch shit are the athletes who are the ones actually getting concussed for entertainment. Continue reading

Authors I Have Loved

Little does the poor kid know. . .

OMG, I just read this book and it’s AMAZING!!! You have to totes check it out! For realz, yo! Only . . . after you read it, don’t read anything else that author wrote. Well, maybe there’s one or two, but seriously, you should quit while you’re ahead. Maybe read the recaps on Wikipedia if you have to know what happens. . .

I’m sure we’ve all come across this, an author with a lot of promise, who ends up rapidly disappointing after taking a wrong turn, often for no discernible reason, at least to the readers. It can be very hard to write well, and continuously, especially when you have an editor breathing down your neck (Hi, GI and Bots!!), and a rabid fan base clamoring for more of the character that you hated. For example, L. Frank Baum and C.S. Lewis had no intentions to continue the stories they started in The Wizard of Oz and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, yet their fans demanded it, and now we have seven Narnia books and over 40 Oz books, with thirteen being written by Baum. Agatha Christie is on record as loathing Hercule Poirot (her exact words are “detestable, bombastic, tiresome, ego-centric little creep”), yet kept him going for a long time, simply to please her fan base. Watch New Girl Pilot for Free on iTunes

When I saw Apple was allowing people to view the pilot episode of Fox’s New Girl (starring forever girlchild, Zooey Deschanel) for free on iTunes, I figured I had nothing to lose by watching. I almost ended up backing out when iTunes used the word “adorkable” to describe Deschanel’s character. Adorkable? Really? Gross. Already this show is trying too hard.

New Girl is premiering later this month. Deschanel plays Jess, a woman in her late 20s who finds out her live-in boyfriend is cheating on her when she comes home early for some afternoon delight and catches the Other Woman in her home. Jess smartly decides to move out of the apartment she shares with her boyfriend and into some sort of bachelor pad with three mostly unattached guys. Continue reading

Your 2011 NFL Season Preview,
As Written By An Old-Timey Sportswriter

“A streak of fire, a breath of flame
Eluding all who reach and clutch;
A gray ghost thrown into the game
That rival hands may never touch;
A rubber bounding, blasting soul
Whose destination is the goal — Red Grange of Illinois!”
– Grantland Rice

People don’t write about football players like this any more. Luckily, there’s America’s only all old-timey sports writer NFL preview!

(Note: I didn’t actually research if this was the case, just go with it.)

10 Shows You Should Check Out This Fall

So, yeah, everyone is putting out their list of upcoming fall television shows. And mostly they’re pretty comprehensive, but I say, Bah! Let’s cut through the chum and take a look at programs you should probably watch. We’re not worried about mediocre shows you won’t even DVR. Nope, why waste time? Let’s take a look at a few that look promising! Novel idea, right? And in the next installment we’ll take a look at some you probably shouldn’t watch at all…unless it’s to discuss it shamefully and with derision. Continue reading
