I was late to the game; I’ll admit it. I had no interest in watching a bunch of people who thought they could dance flail around the stage in shiny costumes while a second-rate Simon Cowell (or maybe first-rate Simon Cowell; I don’t really think much of Simon Cowell) tells them they’re whatever the dance equivalent of “pitchy” is. Honestly, I couldn’t even tell you at this point how I finally started watching So You Think You Can Dance in season 5, which is, coincidentally, the same season I started watching American Idol; all I can tell you is that now that I’ve hopped on the hot tamale train, I’ll never go back. Do you guys know what I love watching more than anything else?
If you guessed hot, sweaty men playing soccer, you’d be right on the money. However, I doubt very many of you would be interested in reading a post about the four soccer players I think are hottest, so instead I will give you a post containing four documentaries based on children that I think will be worth your while to watch. House Republicans are expected to vote this week for the fiscal year 2012 Agriculture appropriations bill, that has a provision on page 13 requiring the National Arboretum maintain a very specific portion of its azalea collection, because flowers are pretty and smell nice. Why does this matter? While provisions are being made to keep us fully stocked in flora, the bill would cut $832 million from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program which provides food assistance to low-income mothers and children nationwide. I was flipping through the channels late the other night when I came across Mo’ Better Blues and was instantly taken back to college. I was raised on jazz so Denzel plus Spike Lee plus music composed by Bill Lee played by the Branford Marsalis Quartet featuring Terrence Blanchard was an intoxicating mix. Yes, I was a hep cat, man. Hello fellow Crasstalkers, it’s that time again!
“What time is that?” you ask. Well, I’ll tell you my friends. Once again the Apocalypse is upon us. In honor of this special day, let’s explore all the previous apocalypses (apocali?) of times gone by.
Back in the 1800s, amateur Bible student William Miller began to study the prophecies of Daniel and using the “year-day” method of prophetic interpretation. Wait, “year-day” method? *frantically searches Wikipedia* ahh, so the word day in apocalyptic prophecy is symbolic for an actual year of time. Just so we’re all clear on how this works out for Mr. Miller here, let’s review: Continue reading
Seriously. What. The. Hell. My staple for years was to go to the store, spend hours trying to decide which DVD/VHS tape my dad would appreciate the most that year. I was the king of figuring out what movie each person in my family needed to see for every holiday. I learned better. This is why you don’t buy your Dad a movie on Father’s Day. Continue reading
While Roe v. Wade is still technically the law of the land, there are ten states trying their hardest to make sure an abortion is more difficult to obtain than ever. In some states, women don’t even have reasonable access to abortion. In others, women are being prosecuted for attempting to terminate their pregnancies in non-medical settings, presumably for lack of viable options. Would it be fair to only have three dentists in the entire state of Kansas?
