It’s Time For Minority Superhero Movies

The current run of big screen adaptations of comic book characters can be traced directly back to Richard Donner’s 1978 film Superman. Since then, we’ve had five more Superman movies, seven Batman movies, a Green Lantern movie, four Spider-Man movies, two Fantastic Four movies, five X-Men movies, three Iron Man movies, a Thor movie, a Captain America movie, and a movie with Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. This week, Thor: The Dark World, the sequel to 2011’s Thor, hits theaters, and next summer we’re getting X-Men Days of Future PastThe Amazing Spider-Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

What do all of these movies have in common, besides being big budget superhero movies? The titular characters are all white men. In the case of Superman, Thor, and Captain America, they’re the whitest and manliest of white men. Continue reading

Movie Review: Gravity

When I got a call from a friend today asking if I wanted to go see Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, at first I was apprehensive. You see, as a kid, I loved space. I still do, in fact. I went through a (long) phase where I wanted to be an astronaut despite the math and science requirements being far, far beyond my reach, although today’s movie experience may have changed my mind! Gwyneth Paltrow Scared of Potential Hit Piece, Sends Frantic E-Mail

GwynethSensuousLaunch2008Ah, the life of an Academy Award winning actress. Mostly things should be smooth sailing, eh? There are blog posts to write about the mundanities of life, yet also thoughts to postulate about the stress of working (in movies), raising a family, and possibly finding the most fabulous shoe ever made…and of course we can’t forget the shrimp tacos.

Of course there are fabulous shrimp tacos to make in one’s restaurant quality kitchen — of which should be lauded over friends and families and everyone on the internet ever. How dare anyone decide that all of this, and much more, should be at best polarizing, at worst the subject of scrutiny.

The Hollywood Caller: The GOP’s Insecurity Surrounding Two Hillary Clinton Movies

gop_elephant2

Who’s the most powerful non-announced candidate for a proposed presidential run? Hillary Clinton. And the GOP has started their rage early. Rich Kids will still be rich but now on television — where you can mostly find them anyway. Ryan Seacrest to perfect his game show “Come on Down” voice, Batman will most likely need his prostate checked before gearing up for an upcoming movie. Steven Spielberg is able to say “No.” Michael Bay should always take a note. Lindsay Lohan and Oprah have a chat. Continue reading

The Hollywood Caller: The Season of Monstrous Murder-Sharks is Upon Us

Tara Reid still has a job with the sharks if she wants it, Johnny Depp is tired of being that guy finally, Diane Lane takes a walk in a pantsuit, Rush Limbaugh to continue spewing bile from his gaping jaws (Ha! Jaws and Sharks), Star Wars to maybe not slop every CGI thing it can into one movie, and Domes really are scary. Continue reading
