Horror
This post is, of course, prompted by my own current neighbour troubles. None of them is really all that dire (no one leaving their outdoor water running so as to wash away my house’s foundations, as I read somewhere ages ago) but they do irk.
The barking dogs, left in their front yard. For a while I deployed a silent whistle, which seemed promising, but it’s REAL tiresome to have to spend the evening dumping the cat off my lap and getting up and going to the door time after time (the whistle doesn’t work through walls or glass). Warning: This video is seriously scary. Watch it in bed if you are a masochist and want to turn your hair prematurely white like the bully in “It.” Continue reading
So we reach the midseason finale of a show that has worked extremely hard to shake off the cobwebs of its second season which saw most everything drag to an abrupt halt where there was even a question of the show’s survival if it didn’t improve. What’s made the first half of the third season remarkable is the almost new found focus and energy the show’s found by sloughing off most of the trappings of the second season and putting forth a reinvigorated showing to add more balance to the middling product. When The House of the Devil hit the festival circuit–leading up to a limited theatrical run–in 2009, Ti West established himself as a horror director to watch. Though not his first project, The House of the Devil hit a sweet spot: film nerds and critics loved his movie, but so did genre aficionados. West beautifully crafted a picture that paid homage to the Satanic Panic flicks of the 80s while also establishing a knack for building tension and dread with slow-burn storytelling and a clear directorial point-of-view.
Fast forward to 2011: West’s new film, The Innkeepers, is currently available on-demand through your cable provider or Amazon Instant Video. Though his new feature finds him in familiar territory (limited setting, small cast), The Innkeepers stands on its own merits. Continue reading
Is horror now the safest bet in television? By all accounts, American Horror Story is a hot mess: it’s glaringly derivative; the writing and editing seems to have been done by someone in desperate need of Adderall. The performances tend to fall on the hammy side, yet taken as a whole, the show is irresistibly entertaining. Continue reading
Good evening Crasstalk. It has been a while since we shared a scary movie so I dug up a really good one for you. Tonight’s feature is 1964’s The Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price. It’s based on Richard Matheson classic I Am Legend. Continue reading
Well hello my little troublemakers. Hope you are having a great day. Here is this week’s scary movie. It’s called Attack of the Giant Leeches, and its subject matter is pretty self-explanatory. Hope you enjoy it.
Now let’s all try to keep our clothes on out there.
Well good evening gang. Hope you have had a wonderful day. A quick reminder that there will be a writer’s workshop around 5 PM EST tomorrow night. Hopefully we can come up with some great stuff for the next month.
Tonight’s movie is 1965’s Bloody Pit of Horror. It involves a creepy castle, models, and a mysterious figure known as The Crimson Executioner. It’s badness is simply elegant. Hope you enjoy it.
Have a great night.
