When I got a call from a friend today asking if I wanted to go see Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, at first I was apprehensive. You see, as a kid, I loved space. I still do, in fact. I went through a (long) phase where I wanted to be an astronaut despite the math and science requirements being far, far beyond my reach, although today’s movie experience may have changed my mind! I have always been fascinated by the stars and planets and one would think Gravity, with its beautiful images of Earth from space visible even in the preview, would be my kind of movie. I feel I need to preface this post with the following: I am not a technologically savvy person. I love my iPhone for the reasons most of us love our smart phones: in addition to making calls and sending texts, I can check Facebook and Twitter and email and the Internet wherever I am. It gives me directions when I’m hopelessly lost (sometimes — ask me about the time I wound up in the middle of a field. The phone said turn right!) It means I’m never without somewhere to eat. It is a portable computer I can fit in the palm of my hand. What’s not to love? Continue reading
Last night, while sleeping the sleep of a teacher who knows there’s no school in the morning (my district called our snow day last night at 10,) I had a very vivid dream about chocolate chip muffins. When I woke up, I remembered seeing some chocolate chips in the pantry. And what better way to spend an early March snow day than baking? Continue reading
Are you a doodler? An absent-minded scribbler? Do you draw the same thing all the time, or do you like to challenge yourself and scribble something new every time you’re stuck in an endless meeting or waiting through a conference call? Do you find yourself filling the page with dots, or do you stick to a corner? Do you draw animals or people, or dots and lines?
Actually, if you’re a dull-meeting-doodler, you’re in luck, says science. A study from a few years ago suggests doodlers may remember more information than those well-behaved, goody two shoes non-doodlers.
So, let’s see ’em. Grab the nearest piece of paper and doodle away. Or draw us a picture. Or paint a masterpiece. Scan it in or take a crummy picture with your phone, like I usually do. Continue reading
QOTD: What embarrassing song do you have a hard time not turning off if it comes up on your iPod shuffle or on the radio?
I’ll be the first to admit it: I have really bad taste in music. Maybe “bad” is a strong word. Maybe I should say “unique.” I have unique taste in music. Yeah, that’s better. Continue reading
For most of the year, we Midwesterners are stuck with vegetables grown somewhere down south and picked before they’re really ripe. Then they get trucked up here, artfully arranged in the supermarket and finally make it to our kitchens, where they taste… like nothing. Continue reading
Last fall, I was unemployed. I spent entire days in my (parents’) house, watching Criminal Minds marathons on A&E while eating popcorn and feeling fairly hopeless about my life. When I started having dreams in which Matthew Gray Gubler was saving my life by being a really adorable genius, I figured I needed another hobby, or at least something to occupy my brain before I required a serious Criminal Minds intervention. This is when I started baking.
I am thousands upon thousands of dollars in debt, thanks to five years of a private university education dedicated to a degree in elementary education. I graduated last May and, with the nature of hiring in elementary schools being what it is around here, I was not lucky enough to land a job right away. We’re still holding our breath for this upcoming year, but in the meantime I’ve been babysitting like crazy — it allows me to pay what’s required on my loans for now, puts gas in my car and I even have a little spending money sometimes.
