Fashion Advice: How Do You Layer for Cold Weather and Still Look Cute?

Bear with me, here. I’m going to need a little bit of sympathy and understanding from you, fellow Crasstalkers, because some of you might hate me for the next few things I’m going to say. Particularly those of you who live in places where it gets cold. I live in sunny Southern California and I freak out and need a jacket when it’s 60 degrees outside. I am a baby when it comes to weather. There are probably babies that are better equipped to deal with it, emotionally. I understand all of these things. I apologize. Continue reading

The New Hunger Games Trailer Debuts

Premiering this morning on Good Morning America, the newest Hunger Games trailer gives us a peek at some of the most exciting and critical points of the film based on Suzanne Collins’ young adult novel The Hunger Games. Fans of the series will recognize some familiar faces – Katniss’s co-tribute Peeta Mallark [Josh Hutcherson], Katniss’s BFF4L Gale [Liam Hemsworth], younger sister Primrose Everdeen [Willow Shields], former District 12 champion Haymitch [Woody Harrelson], Katniss’s hairdresser Cinna [Lenny Kravitz!] and the colorful Effie Trinket [Elizabeth Banks]. We get a solid preview of The Reaping ceremony, and the heart wrenching moment when Katniss volunteers for Prim as tribute for District 12. Continue reading

A Brief History of Crasstalk

OK, maybe it didn’t go down like that. It actually started with a casual conversation on Gawker about starting a blog so the Gawker commenters could have a little place of their own to write and amuse one and other.

Bots: So how did Crass come about? Here’s how I remember it.

Back in late 2010, there was a general sense among the denizens of #crosstalk that Gawker was starting to feel like a New Jersey Turnpike rest stop. Any sort of weirdo could stiop by at 2:30 a.m. and poop on the floor before hitting the road again. Around that same time, Nick Denton gave an interview to some magazine (I can’t even remember which one at this point) where he described the burden of entertaining Gawker’s “self-aggrandizing” regulars.

So a few of us started thinking about what would happen if we started our own site. Wouldn’t it be neat if we could write our own blog posts about stuff we cared about instead of merely responding to Richard and Moyland and HamNo all day?

First, there was the Tumblr. However, Botswana Meat Commission FC soon realized the Tumblr was for dirty hipsters and he decided to launch a proper website. He just needed a name. Continue reading

We Are Special Snowflakes Learning With Freedom

Unschooling is a movement that gathered steam from dissatisfaction with the public school system. It is not to be confused with homeschooling, which is another movement entirely. Homeschooling is popular with both very conservative Christians who want to shield their children from the demonic influence of secular humanism and some more liberal people who want to take a more active role in their children’s education. It’s also filled a gap for children who struggle socially and don’t have alternative schooling options that are available in some areas. Continue reading
