Fashion Advice: How Do You Layer for Cold Weather and Still Look Cute?

Bear with me, here. I’m going to need a little bit of sympathy and understanding from you, fellow Crasstalkers, because some of you might hate me for the next few things I’m going to say. Particularly those of you who live in places where it gets cold. I live in sunny Southern California and I freak out and need a jacket when it’s 60 degrees outside. I am a baby when it comes to weather. There are probably babies that are better equipped to deal with it, emotionally. I understand all of these things. I apologize.

Here’s my ridiculous dilemma: I’m most comfortable when it’s sunny and I can wear sandals and a sundress. This means that when fall and winter come around, and it does get pretty chilly here at night, I literally have no idea how to dress myself. (Scarves are for warmth and aren’t just interesting accessories you can accidentally leave at the restaurant? Who knew?)

I love my city but I will not defend it when it comes to fashion, because I am full aware we are not a particularly fashionable city in the traditional sense of actually looking good in clothing. And really, it doesn’t matter, when 99% of the time, you can get away with jeans, a t-shirt and flip flops. But sometimes, you have to go out, and it’s November, and night time, and 40 degrees, and you have no idea what you’re supposed to be wearing, and you want to look cute and attractive, and you put on two sweaters and suddenly look like you’re smuggling a pool toy around your waist.

So here are my questions for you: where are you buying these cute jackets and sweaters and tights that I know must exist, but apparently not in Los Angeles. How the hell are you supposed to wear these things without looking like the Michelin man? What’s your go-to style guide for the fall and winter?

Considering it’s going to be 50 degrees at night this week, I promise to use all of your wise and fashionable advice.
