Gay Marriage More Popular With Lesbians

Apparently the data from states where gay marriage is already recognized shows that, when it comes to who’s actually tying the knot, the lesbians are jumping on board at a much higher rate than gay men.

In Connecticut, for example, 3,252 lesbian couples have wed since 2008, when same-sex marriage was legalized, compared with just 2,053 gay guys…

Marital data obtained by The Post show a stark, 3-to-2 ratio of lesbian marriages, compared to all- male unions.

I wonder if in Real rural America we’re on the verge of seeing shotgun gay weddings.

Calm The F&*# Down

I was wondering what would annoy me enough to rouse me out of my summer funk. And lo and behold, Karen Spears Zacharia, writing for CNN, managed to do it with by whining about the farcical parenting book Go The Fuck to Sleep. She, and some of the commenters at CNN, find no humor whatsoever in a book that makes light of a daily battle for parents of small children. Continue reading

An Imaginary Response to 11 Years of Civil Unions

The recent court battle over marriage equality in New York State reminded me of the battle for civil unions in Vermont. In the summer of 2000, the year that civil unions passed, my husband and I had just opened up a store in the northern part of Vermont. And the civil union debate wasn’t even a debate, it was just one-sided yelling.Just to clear up any misinformation – Vermont is not over-run with free-love hippie beet farmers who count Buddha beads while they meditate over which they love more, pot or homosexuals. In fact, Vermont is a delightfully diverse state filled with thoughtful and deliberative people and, then, some others…not so much.  Continue reading

Of Splinters and Glass Houses: Religion and Marriage Equality

So I hear New York State passed some law or something? I woke up this morning to find Crasstalk excitedly celebrating the passage of marriage equality in New York, and deservedly so. (Don’t get too excited though, New York gays. The associated taxes and fees that Albany will inevitably add to applying for a marriage license may cause you to reconsider your feelings on getting married there. You might be able to be legally married now, but it’s still New York after all. Everything is treated as an opportunity to generate new tax revenues.) Continue reading

NYS Senate Passes Marriage Equality Bill 33-29

After a long wait, a couple of false starts and lots of preening on the senate floor, the New York State Senate passed the Marriage Equality Bill 33-29.

Excuse me while I WHOOZAH! It is official. You may now marry your shoe, dog, computer etc. Lulz wut? You just wanted to marry the adult person you loved? Aaah well you can do that too. But you you wouldn’t want to disappoint the Archbishop Timothy Doland, David Tyree and company would you? Let’s have some of that anarchy they warned about. Get to the drinking and the gay marrying of everything New York! You finally earned some of that “Progressive State” cred.

What? I had to.  Comment

A Male View on Wedding Planning

It was less than 48 hours after the proposal that the binder had already been constructed. I didn’t even really mean to see it, but as I was clearing off our cluttered counter I spotted the pink three-ring binder tucked away under some papers. At first I thought it may have been a work file, but the pale pink seemed an odd choice for a professional folio. I picked it up to examine the meaning of all this.

There was no cover (there would be one later), no binder label (that too) and no indication from the outside what it was for at all. When I opened to the first page and saw a list of links to every wedding website imaginable, I finally realized what I was holding. My fiancée is an incredibly well-organized person, but even for her this was a quick turnaround. My only explanation was that she’d been lying in wait; there had to be a secret cache of magazine clipouts, Internet printouts, and pricing lists that she’d constructed over the previous months. As it turns out, she had compiled all of this over the now 48 hour life of our engagement. The ideas, she said, had been stewing in her head since she was a little girl.

British Woman Will Have Uterus Transplant

As Father’s Day is quickly approaching, and I’m drowning the sound of my biological clock ticking loudly in the echo chamber created by my lack of uterus – I’ve been startled, intrigued and then creeped-out by the following story that ran across on my RSS feeds: British Woman Eva Ottoson, 56, is heading towards ground breaking surgery to donate her womb to her own daughter.

Mothers Who Dislike Their Children Are Disturbed, Not Normal

A few months ago the blogosphere was all abuzz with the personal article about a woman who hated her daughter.  Concerned commenters pointed out that she sounded like she had real psychological problems (obviously) and it was more than just the Terrible Twos.  The problem was and is not with mothers who sometimes get frustrated because Little Snowflake keeps painting the walls with his poop – having a very human “OMG you are so annoying!” moment is not what this woman was talking about.  The issue with this woman was that she was putting the onus of responsibility to have a connection with her child on the child – not on herself.  Women who have Borderline Personalities cannot form appropriate and healthy attachments to people – including their own children, and especially their own daughters.

How I Dropped out of High School and into a Cult

I never did this

I’ve given up trying to explain what it is I do when asked at a family reunion or some other social engagement. I’ve seen too many eyes glaze over and I won’t responsible for another person slipping into a coma while I try to explain Jboss, Tomcat and Apache. Most people are surprised to learn that I didn’t attend a four year university, nor in fact did I ever graduate High School. Many are even further shocked to learn I actually went to Bible College.
