Who IS America’s Hottest Attorney General?

California Attorney General Kamala Harris
California Attorney General Kamala Harris

President Obama ignited a firestorm of controversy when he described California Attorney General Kamala Harris “as by far, the best looking attorney general.” Um, Mr. President? That’s not the kind of thing you’re supposed to say. You’re supposed to be better than that. We might expect Bill Clinton to say things like “Check out the gams on that deputy assistant secretary of agriculture!” But not you. We elected you because you’re not a skanky man-whore like Bill Clinton or a gibbering rodeo clown eating a shit sandwich like George W. Bush. Continue reading

The Day Broadcast News Was Born

CBSLOGOBIGGER

Broadcasting is celebrating a birthday this month.

On March 13, 1938, the modern newscast was born.

On that day, just over 75 years ago, CBS Radio aired not just a broadcast, but a broadcast that linked live reports from across Europe as Hitler moved to annex Austria. That had never been done before. Now, it’s the very heart of broadcast news: this is what is happening right now.  Continue reading

Introducing Nerea, Your New Crasstalk Theme

It was April 30, 2011 when we purchased the Zillapress theme and shortly thereafter that we switched over. That’s way too long to keep one theme so we embarked on a journey to spruce the place up a bit. The design elements that we wanted for the new theme were something that put the emphasis on the posts and stayed away from too much clutter. We also wanted something that was simple yet eye catching. And lastly the 550 pixel wide column that we’ve been constrained to was just too small.

We are pleased to introduce our new theme Nerea written by Keeval who has spent the last few weeks customizing the theme and taking every suggestion and request seriously. Continue reading

Learning to Cover a Tragedy

Every December 3rd, around 6:13pm, I stop for a minute and remember the Worcester 6.

On December 3rd, 1999, two homeless people named Thomas Levesque and Julie Ann Barnes were living inside the Worcester Cold Storage Warehouse. The building was abandoned. It was a relic of another age, six stories tall, so close to the elevated Interstate 290 that, if you wanted to, you could reach from the side of the highway and almost touch the façade of the building. Seventh Circuit Finds Illinois ‘Concealed Carry’ Ban Unconstitutional

In an opinion by Judge Posner (he of the “let’s sell our organs and babies!” camp and probable #1 reason why he’ll never be on the US Supreme Court), the 7th Circuit yesterday released an opinion invalidating Illinois’s law forbidding a person from carrying a loaded gun in public, finding Illinois’s complete ban on concealed-carry permits to be unconstitutional under the 2nd Amendment.  Continue reading

Undecided Voters: Really, People??

I am fascinated by this creature known as the undecided voter, particularly with respect to the 2012 presidential election. Because I really don’t understand how anyone could possibly be on the fence in choosing between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. The media rather hilariously uses the euphemism “low-information voters” to describe this group. But what does this loaded euphemism mean?

Wikipedia tells us the following about such voters: “they vote, but are generally poorly informed about politics. They are less likely to vote, tend to be more moderate than high-information voters,” and “look for candidates whom they find “personally appealing.” They “tend to be swing voters” and “rely on cues about the candidates that are often of limited usefulness, and in the absence of real information make their decision based upon stereotypical beliefs about what traits such as physical attractiveness, race and gender can tell them about a candidate’s suitability for office.”  Well, then! I’m guessing this was the crowd that preferred Bush 43 to Kerry because he’s the kind of guy you’d want to have a beer with. A fine way to select a president. Continue reading
