Here’s Why Starbucks’#RaceTogether Initiative is Misguided

When Starbucks announced their new race initiative, #RaceTogether, that would see baristas attempting to hold conversations with customers surrounding race issues, the Twitter backlash was swift and conclusive. Downgrading the importance of race relations — or patronizing the efforts of those who work tirelessly to discuss race in more fitting environments by suggesting it can be easily dissected while waiting in a Starbucks line — proved laughable to most and just short of offensive to others.

Were it not for our collective eye-roll when it comes to the gimmicky nature of the corporate sanitization of various issues affecting our society, the outcry in response could have been relegated to just Black Twitter. However, given the diversity of social media, a community of citizens that is an actual microcosm of the world over, many, regardless of race, were unified in their expression of distaste. And that should tell Starbucks something. Continue reading

“Intro To Knots” Community Season 4 Episode 10 Liveblog

Singing In the Rain
The Return of Foot Fetishist Cornwallis

So here we are with episode 10, which is the season’s Xmas episode (thanks for delaying it Ennn Beee Seee.)  This week’s episode synopsis (from wiki):  Community Season 4 Episode 10 “Intro to Knots” – Jeff (Joel McHale) organizes a lovely holiday gathering at his apartment but Annie (Alison Brie) secretly invites Professor Cornwallis (recurring guest star Malcolm McDowell), to get in his good graces. When it becomes apparent that Professor Cornwallis intends to give them a bad grade on their joint History paper, the atmosphere quickly deteriorates and the group takes decisive action.

I thought last week’s muppet episode was quite entertaining especially the hallucinogenic berry scene with Brad Pitt wigged Jason Alexander (and the fact Britta was holding.)  Apparently, this is one of the episodes done after Chevy Chase’s uncomfortably racist comments and subsequent dismissal from the show.  Chevy’s lines were recorded as part of his agreement with the producers.  It’s Merry Xmas, Community fans. “Intro To Felt Surrogacy” Community Season 4 Episode 9 Live Blog

Not A PuppetIn tonight’s episode, the Greendale Seven have become puppets and befriend a wild mountain man who looks vaguely like the mean guy from Pretty Woman and/or the insecure crazy neurotic bald guy from the show about nothing.

I thought that last weeks episode was entertaining. I did not know who Sophie B. Hawkins was till she started singing and then it was “oh right, I’ve heard of her.” This in a way partially explains why I suck at music trivia or “Guess That Tune.” Even the Abed story was fun although I have to admit that the preacher’s daughter and the quirky weirdo were quite over the top thus making the character played by Brie Larson (who many of you know from “The United States of Tara” and who I know from “The League” as the Golden Gate loving “Ohhhhhh! Pair!”) as the best choice of the three. Brie returns tonight. Continue reading
