Why Some Actors Should Never Sing

Now, we’ve long discussed the conundrum that is the singing actor vs. the acting singer. Some can pull both off very nicely. We like it when NPH does it yes? Yes. We can even say that we like it when Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway take to crooning. So it’s a splendid thing when you get two really good actors who can also belt out a song. Did you know that Robert Downey Jr. is a halfway decent singer? Meaning if you didn’t know it was him, you wouldn’t think it was him. Here check it out. Then there is a list of actors who should really just pick one or the other. We could put J.Lo in that category. The bigger list, however, is the list of actors who just shouldn’t sing again ever. Saturday Night Drive-In

Happy Saturday! It’s been a while since we have done a Saturday night movie so tonight I have a special treat courtesy of the Internet Archives. This is The Legend of Boggy Creek, a classic horror docudrama from 1972. The movie examines the legend about a swamp monster in rural Arkansas. The movie has appearances by a number of the locals who had claimed to see the monster and also contains reenactments of alleged encounters with the creature. It’s actually pretty damn creepy. The movie is an obvious inspiration for later horror movies, most notably The Blair Witch Project. The movie spawned four sequels including one that was so good it was featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Nerd News Roundup: Back From The Dead

Greetings. Aaye! QaQ Daq legh SoH! 0110100001101001! This week, we are going to roll up the black sleeves of our arcane robes, open a copy of Necromancy for Dummies and take a look at stories involving the undead, the soon to be dead those lucky few who have been brought back from Death’s cold grasp. Listen, and you’ll hear the Assassin’s song of Death. It’s the kind of music one would hear in a movie about a zombie falling for a girl. It’s certainly better than Archie and Jughead will be subjected to, that poor soul.  We’ll take a look at these tales and learn why Gary is a horrible, horrible person who deserves swift kick in the groin in this NERD NEWS ROUNDUP!

Early Review of Real Steel

When I was in college, I had the privilege of spending a few weeks training to be a boxer. The guy I trained with was an amateur, but trained with pros in Chicago. He taught me how to move, how to defend, and how to punch. I’m not saying I could go toe to toe with anyone, but I had a ton of fun doing it. Consequently, I have a soft spot for boxing movies.

When I saw the previews for Real Steel a few months ago, I laughed. It screamed “poorly made kids movie designed to push toys”. Let me be the first to say I was wrong. I was very wrong, Real Steel is awesome.

Today in Movie Poster Art Done Right: Young Adult

Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman, who wrote and directed (respectively) Juno, have paired up their talents once again for Young Adult, which stars Charlize Theron as a newly divorced YA writer who returns to her small hometown. It’s not a film I would automatically be interested in seeing. Cody seems like a fun person (Have you watched her interview web series, Red Band Trailer? You should, it’s great.), but I find her screenwriting talent debatable. Similarly, I don’t see that Reitman has a noteworthy point-of-view as a director. I think Charlize Theron is talented, but I’m more apt to see a film because of the writer or director than I am to see it for the star. Today the poster for Young Adult hit the web, and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that it makes me just a little more interested in seeing the film. Click through to take a look and give your reaction. Continue reading
