Academy Awards Liveblog

Welcome to the 84th Annual Academy Award liveblog. Or, more precisely, Crasstalk’s liveblog of Hollywood’s 84th annual night of self-congratulatory backslapping and too long speeches about people none of us care about. Billy Crystal has been dusted off and trotted out after a shake-up in the hosting and directing duties that took out Eddie Murphy. Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress Oscar Roundup

The never surprising Best Supporting Actor/Actress race! No, not really. This award has been given to surprise recipients Marisa Tomei, Cuba Gooding Jr., Kim Basinger, and Jennifer Hudson.  However, this does mean that you’d better be able to back this thing up with some stunning post-award greatness in order to ever land the top prize. What will be this year’s big trend? Continue reading

If you happen across Santorum’s name emblazoned across a perpetually left-turning vehicle on the television today, it’s not your hangover. That’s right, the sometimes-leader in the GOP presidential primary death-match has purchased a sponsorship of a car in today’s Daytona 500.  Continue reading

Oscar Best Actor and Best Actress Roundup

The last two years have seen Colin Firth and Jeff Bridges win Best Actor while Best Actress has been won by Natalie Portman and Sandra Bullock. Sure, Natalie’s performance was good but was it really better than Annette Benning? Was Bullock better than Helen Mirren in The Last Station? Probably not. Save Bullock, all four of the aforementioned awards were fairly locked up before the ceremony. This year is shaping up to be a little more of a contest. Continue reading

Recipe Sunday: Patacones (Smashed Green Plantains)

You may have know them as tostones, but in Panama (and a few other Latin American countries), we call them patacones. They are made with green plantains. A plantain looks very similar to a banana, except that you typically eat it cooked. It is a staple of many Latin cultures, and I usually prepare this dish once a week. You can also cook plantains when they are ripe, but that is a recipe for another Sunday. Continue reading
