“It is my opinion that absent Rio Tinto’s mining activity on Bougainville or its insistence that the Panguna mine be re-opened, the government would not have engaged in hostilities or taken military action on the island.”
”Because of Rio Tinto’s financial influence in PNG, the company controlled the government.”
”The government of PNG followed Rio Tinto’s instructions and carried out its requests … BCL was directly involved in the military operations on Bougainville, and it played an active role. BCL supplied helicopters, which were used as gunships, the pilots, troop transportation, fuel and troop barracks.”

One of the most storied soccer clubs in South America, River Plate of Argentina, a club which has won the Argentinian league 33 times in its 110 year history, was yesterday relegated to the 2nd division for the first time ever.
River Plate fans did not take this well. Their final match was stopped a minute before the appropriately-named injury time as irate fans, obviously not believing in their team mounting a comeback from 2 goals down, began to charge the ground and throw objects at the players and referees. Opposition fans were forced to stay for hours in a closed off section of the stadium surrounded by police, while River Plate fans set things on fire, smashed shops, threw rocks at the police, and generally behaved like soccer hooligans. Today California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a budget plan that in large part he put together. The original plan had called for spending cuts in the budget and a package of tax increases that would have been put up for a vote for all Californians to decide on. Republicans in the state assembly managed to block the statewide popular vote on the tax increases leaving only the tax cuts in the budget which alone did not provide a balanced and sustainable budget. I guess the Republicans think the people should not be allowed to decide to increase their own taxes to fix a massive budget problem. Bring on the bickering. Source SFGate. Comment
I’m not poring over all 24,000 Sarah Palin emails. That’s just lunacy. Especially since the political wonder team of Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore think it’s a repulsive thing to do, because if you can’t use Kutcher and Moore as a barometer then you’re just doomed. But one thing that caught my eye is what’s been reported about her writing ability. You would think that the same person who wrote speaking notes on her palm and who has a habit of saying the equivalent of monkey-speech after being hit in the head with a log, could barely pick up a pen without becoming confused – But you would be wrong, so very wrong.
Robert Sayegh, an author of children’s literature and former Sesame Street writer, was booted from a Atlantic Southeast Airlines flight when he said ‘fuck‘ after hearing his flight was going to be further delayed. Sayegh is from Brooklyn where F-bombs are a part of the vernacular.
Sayegh apparently muttered the curse word to himself but a nearby flight attendant took offense and had him removed from the plane while on a layover in Detroit. Passengers around him were supposedly not offended, but the sky bitch/bastard flight attendant was. Continue reading
