Movie Review: Man of Steel

supermanThere few movies that have been as anticipated as Warner Brothers’ reboot of the Superman movie franchise. A lot is riding on “Man of Steel,” especially after the somewhat disappointing 2006 “Superman Returns,” including the future of a “Justice League” movie that could rival Marvel’s “The Avengers.” In short, “Man of Steel” is an exciting, yet thoughtful movie that succeeds both as a summer popcorn movie and a treatment of one of the most venerable figures in American popular culture.

The Coming Fight Over Marvel Movie Rights

MarvelGirlOver the past several years, fans of Marvel Comics characters have been truly blessed. After years of nothing but Batman and Superman movies, Marvel has firmly staked its claim as the king of the box office. Unfortunately, all that success has come with a price, and the big studios that own the rights to various Marvel characters are gearing up for a turf war that may prevent some of the biggest characters in the Marvel universe from ever appearing on screen together. Movie Review: “Star Trek Into Darkness”

The Star Trek franchise is damaged and spiraling out of control.
The Star Trek franchise is damaged and spiraling out of control.

Star Trek Into Darkness is the latest entry in what has been characterized as director JJ Abrams’ revival of Star Trek. Re-assembling the cast from the 2009 blockbuster, Abrams and writers Damon Lindelof, Robert Orci, and Alex Kurtzman attempt to weave a tale of adventure, romance, and revenge. Unfortunately, this attempt is not only an utter failure; it’s also an assault upon the senses, and an insult to human intelligence. Warning: spoilers follow. Continue reading

Star Trek vs Superman: A Tale of Two Trailers

Both Man of Steel, the Superman movie franchise reboot, and Star Trek released their third and possibly final full-length trailers. As a die-hard fan of both Superman and Star Trek, I cannot help but notice that these trailers present very divergent understandings of their respective source material. I look at both these trailers and think that both are visual feasts, but only the Man of Steel trailer gets the essence of the source material, while JJ Abrams’s Star Trek Into Darkness trailer highlights action and adventure, but precious little else to distinguish it from any other large-scale space opera. Sorry Former Onion Staffers, Calling a 9-year Old the C-Word Isn’t Funny

the_onion_image
Last night The Onion sent out a tweet about 9-year old Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis wherein they called her a “cunt.” We can only imagine this resulted from being an adorable little kid who was totally enjoying her run as an Oscar contender? Or because picking on kids who bring puppy purses to high profile events is all the rage now? The CEO quickly apologized, but some former staffers believe that it lowers The Onion‘s integrity to, you know, apologize for being a ginormous jerk to a little kid. Continue reading

The Hell Are They Wearing? 2013 Oscars

Ladies in silver, white, blue, and FLOTUS! lit up Hollywood in celebration of the year in film. The men looked hipster handsome, many accessorizing with vests and beards (the ones that go on your face). The couples sizzled: Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Naomi Watts and Liev Schrieber, George Clooney and his date for a second season, Stacey Kiebler, and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner gave us hope that they actually enjoy each other in real life…they are the true thespians.

All in all, very good fashion show! It was full-on glitz and glamour with no notable disasters if you don’t count the anatomically correct darts in Anne Hathaway’s dress. Continue reading

The Hollywood Caller: Patton Oswalt to become Television’s Next Big Puritan-ist

patton_oswalt

Patton Oswalt, funny human, will show us his “Salem Side” on the small screen; Star Wars gets another pair of Rockports; Julian Fellowes probably can’t multitask; Smash‘s Dramaturg got turdulent; Ke$ha thinks things apparently; Shia LaBeouf realizes that crashing robots are more fun than the whole thespian thing; Russell Crowe still has vocal chords.
