Your Commute To Work is Killing You

If you want to be skinny, healthy and not suffer from soul-crushing loneliness, researchers say you should try living closer to where you work.

Those stressful hours spent listening to drive-time radio do not merely make us less happy. They also make us less healthy. The Gallup survey, for instance, found that one in three workers with a 90-minute daily commute has recurrent neck or back problems. Our behaviors change as well, conspiring to make us less fit: When we spend more time commuting, we spend less time exercising and fixing ourselves meals at home.

So economists who have studied commute times and how they affect us have found that we’re basically tricking ourselves into thinking we want a big backyard in the suburbs. Apparently what we really want is more free time to pursue our own happiness in an Escape From New York-esque urban hellscape.

Liveblog of the UEFA Champions League Final

It’s live blog time! (Again!)

The finals of the UEFA Champions League between Manchester United and FC Barcelona starts this afternoon at 2:45ish. The English and Spanish domestic champions have 90 minutes to decide the best team in European football for the 2010-2011 UEFA season. Join me here as I opine on the game with gchat cameos from Botswana. Feel free to chime in with comments or questions, but not concerns.

The UEFA Champions League Final is sort of like our Super Bowl if we allowed other countries to play football. It’s like the World Series if it were truly a World Series. It’s like the BCS national Championship if we allowed teams from Idaho to play for the title. Continue reading

Training Corner: Scratch That

Cat scratch fever! It’s a Motor City Madman song, a real disease (I’ve had it!), and a cliche way to start an article about cats and their scratching habits. Whether you have an adult cat that you would someday like to wean off your 15-year-old couch in hopes of getting a new one, or you’re adding a kitten to the family, knowing why they scratch and what you can do to ensure they use what you want them to use is a big issue. One option that isn’t on the table: Declawing. And we’ll talk about that too. Continue reading
