2013 Emmy Nominations: Netflix Breaks Through and Joins the Ranks!

It’s possible the networks are throwing a little shade this morning, as they now have to contend with that for-pay digital online movie clearing house, Netflix, in the world of scripted television. It must make them feel all goofy in the wallet now that another viewing vehicle has entered the ring. Haha! James Gandolfini may be laughing just a little bit way up there, since his groundbreaking show on HBO, The Sopranos, can be counted as the first time network television really had to compete with an outside source full of curses and nudity in order to make their little shows on the boob tube really work. The Three Best Comedy Specials on Netflix Instant

Netflix_envelopWhen I was a kid, in order to gorge on comedy specials I had to ask my grandma to drive me around to the six video rental stores within 3-5 mile radius of our home. Because there was so much overlap between each store’s collection, it was a rare treat to find something new. Once upon a time you basically had to be on a sitcom to get a special released on video.

Arrested Development Fans Rejoice! New Season and Film in the Offing

Fans of America’s favorite dysfunctional family (no, not the Lohans) are in a much better mood this morning, as word out of  series creator Mitch Hurwitz is that Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi and the rest of the Bluth clan will return to the air sometime in the summer of 2013. Less Content + Higher Prices = People Leaving Netflix

Netflix recently changed its pricing scheme so that those who want both streaming and disk delivery will be charged up to 60% more per month. The accountants at Netflix saw streaming usage and content acquisition costs going up and needed to offset those costs with higher revenues. In what surely could not have been unforeseen consequences a loss of distribution deals at the same time as a price hike has caused some customers to reevaluate their options.
