2013 Emmy Nominations: Netflix Breaks Through and Joins the Ranks!

It’s possible the networks are throwing a little shade this morning, as they now have to contend with that for-pay digital online movie clearing house, Netflix, in the world of scripted television. It must make them feel all goofy in the wallet now that another viewing vehicle has entered the ring. Haha! James Gandolfini may be laughing just a little bit way up there, since his groundbreaking show on HBO, The Sopranos, can be counted as the first time network television really had to compete with an outside source full of curses and nudity in order to make their little shows on the boob tube really work. Dennis Franz’s butt cheeks on NYPD Blue weren’t happy about that development. So let’s see how everyone fared.

Sheesh. Modern Family. This has really GOT to be the end of the run for this show, right?! Yes, sure. It was groundbreaking. It was television innovation, but now it’s more or less the same running gags that we’ve come to expect season after season, right?! Like seriously, how many more times do we need confirmation that Phil Dunphy is some sort of dorky, idiot brother you only call on holidays? Or that Julie Bowen’s character is uptight, screamy, and nails on a chalkboard annoying in a strained neck vein kind of way? This is what we’re saying. Nonetheless, we’re still talking about five nominations this go round. Urgh.

The big news is that Netflix managed to pull in a couple of big nods. The Kevin Spacey starrer, which he’s been nominated, House of Cards, and Arrested Development, which landed former child star, and forever comedic foil, Jason Bateman a nod in the lead actor, comedy category. This wasn’t too surprising. But what it says to the industry is that traditional television be it, network or cable, isn’t the only game in town. As more and more people flock online to stream their entertainment choices, the networks better find a way to keep up. Don’t be surprised if NBC announces a lineup of purely online offerings. Haha, NBC. People only slightly ever watch your network. Whatever will they do now that 30 Rock has ended? Create a show about a psychic talking monkey that has a Jekyll and Hyde complex? COULD TOTALLY HAPPEN! Have you seen their fall shows for the last two seasons?

As reported by the New York Times, a senior broadcast network executive said, “It’s hard to say anything about the Netflix thing because we only sound defensive or whiny.” We say, “Step your game up.”

In the world of snubs, of course there are many. Some of you brought up Morena Baccarin from Homeland, and how strange it is that she’s nominated and there’s nothing for Michelle Fairley’s Catelyn Stark from Game of Thrones who this season [SPOILER ALERT! But really if you don’t know this by now, you’ve been in a coma] saw her daughter-in-law stabbed in the womb, her son shot full of arrows, and the dismantling and demise of all she worked for and THAT was right before having her throat slit. Yeah, that shouldn’t be rewarded, but we dunno, being Brody’s pretty wife who doesn’t get the luxury of displaying the epic Claire Danes Ugly Cry Face, gets a nom? Uh-huh. Beat it, Inara. (Some of you will get this reference.) And then there’s Christina Hendricks from Mad Men, who we assume will forever be locked out. Even Don’s latest fling, “Sylvia” played by Linda Cardellini (Velma from the Scooby-Doo movie!) got an Emmy nod.

Here’s the list. Tell us what you think in the comments.
