When I was eight years old, my family spent the month of July visiting my stepfather’s parents on their farm outside of Wichita Kansas. The madness has subsided. We’re safe and comfortable, which I realize is more than I can say for a lot of people in New Jersey, Queens, and elsewhere. We were far from the worst of it, I know. But I figured I might as well set everything down now before it washes away like so many trees and debris.
I would hope that those of my friends who thought it was ‘all a bunch of hype, just like Irene’ are now sufficiently chastened. But I don’t think even those of us who took it seriously expected something on this scale. As of Monday evening I was envisioning something like the following: staying in while drinking wine and eating all the snacks we’d stocked up on and playing Settlers of Catan by candlelight until the power went back on in a day or so, at which point we’d switch to watching movies until the subways came back in another day or so and I no longer had an excuse to stay home from work. Well, here we go again. Here is our list of hurricane resources for you kids on the East Coast. This year I actually included Vermont since Launie was the only one who actually got hit last year. Stay safe, kids.
Good morning gang and especially you Crasstalkers on the East Coast. By the time you are reading this there is probably only about 24 hours left before you start to feel the effects of the hurricane. Not ready yet? Go, now. Here’s a couple of things to get you started and a list of emergency contacts and numbers you may need. I have included mostly state government links, but please feel free to add info from your own area in the comments. Here is a handy list of supplies you might need for the storm. You probably have many of them around your house already, just get them together in one place where you can find them even if it is dark. Additionally, if you live in an evacuation zone you need to have a bag ready in case you need to get on the move quickly. Also, make sure you make a plan to keep in touch with your friends and family during the storm. Below are a few resources by city in case you need them.

In 1977 Joe Strummer sang that hate and war are the only things we got today and it’s hard not to think that, man, how some things never change. Although, then he goes on to sing about “wops” and “kebab greeks” and the song seems to be about “wars” between different ethnic groups in England and it sounds as though Joe doesn’t like foreigners at all.
