Daily Habits of the Wealthy

6355220839_982b1263d5_mAccording to Tom Corley a financial planner who studied 350 rich and poor people, wealthy people have some daily habits in common. He wrote the book, Rich Habits – The Daily Success Habits of Wealthy Individuals. While the book strongly states that these habits make you more successful and as a consequence, more wealthy, you have to wonder if it is the chicken or the egg here. Let’s start with the book’s definition of wealthy – $160k/year in earnings and holding assets of $3.2 million. Poor was defined as income under $30k/year and less than $5k worth of assets. So what are the daily habits that the wealthy have in common? Some are quite interesting…. Continue reading

When Will Being Young, Black and Male Cease to be a Crime?

When we think of racial profiling and subsequent murders leading from the act, so many of the stories host a common thread, “A suspicious black male…” This is the thread that binds many young, black men across regions, through time, and through shared history. This is something Emmett Till, Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin and numerous others can count as their experience in life and…in death. Continue reading

Why Greece is Going Slowly Fascist (and Why More Countries May Follow)

For those of us watching the situation in Greece, and in Europe more generally, we are faced with the prospect of creeping fascism. In Greece and Hungary, and to a lesser extent Finland, the UK, France, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and a hodgepodge of other countries, fascist parties are emerging. In Greece the Golden Dawn, and in Hungary the Jobbik, have emerged as very important players on the social and political scenes. Fire-breathing nativists, these parties advocate for a kind of xenophobic, racist, politics that has not been heard so clearly for sixty-five years. Continue reading

Singlism Is Real and I Have Experienced it

I am single. In fact, I’ve been single my entire professional career. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered that being discriminated against for being single in the professional world has a name, and some academic backing: singlism.

Some will say it’s a myth, that it’s just another symptom of a generation of workers that feels entitled to everything. I know better, because I’ve experienced it first-hand. Continue reading

Signing Off

CARRADIOI was 16 when I first walked into a newsroom.

It was WCCM in Lawrence, Massachusetts (city motto:  Arson Capital of the Nation!). I was a high-school senior in the town next door. My school had an internship program where I could get out of the hellish school day on a half-day and intern in what would allegedly be my chosen career. I wanted to be a writer, but the local paper didn’t take high school interns.   Continue reading

Canadian Senate Expenses Scandal Reaches Prime Minister’s Office

In February, randyfmcdonald and I wrote about just how useless the Senate of Canada is and the expenses scandal engulfing the Senate. At the time, the scandal was (by Canadian standards) bad enough, with various Senators claiming money they weren’t entitled to, and questions arising as to whether those Senators were even constitutionally qualified to hold their offices. Continue reading

Retro Liveblog: Joe Scarborough Whines About The President’s Taxes

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Today on Joe Scarborough’s Beltway Circlejerk, our intrepid host had himself quite a fit about the President’s 2012 taxes. Personally, I found it rather sad, but also rife with opportunities to make jokes about Joe Scarborough & Friends relative lack of understanding of the world outside of the $750-a-plate brunch crowd. To that end, let’s have a little liveblog fun- Continue reading

Brad Paisley and LL Cool J Come Together to Dismiss Racism with a Song

Music has often been a way for people to address complex issues or work through painful topics, with protest songs and songs about war often exposing people to new thoughts and ideas. But sometimes an idea fails so profoundly in its execution of cultural criticism that you literally cannot believe anyone thought this was a good idea. The Hairpin calls this song a “lyrical disgrace,” and they’re honestly correct. But the most appalling part is the idea that these issues are all things that happened a long time ago, and those of us today bear no responsibility for racism in our society. Continue reading

War Stories from the Front Line of College Admissions

Over at Crassparenting, I’ve shared my thoughts for parents about how to prepare their students for the college admissions process. Knowing my audience, I thought that Crasstalkers would rather hear the war stories from my odd job.

There are stupid questions: One father asked in front of 600 people if our food service had diet food because his fat daughter couldn’t afford to gain the Freshman 15.  Continue reading
