Staycation, All I Ever Wanted

My wonderful employer, in their generous wisdom, decreed late in the evening last Friday that contractors need to take five days of unpaid time off (also known as a furlough). This means that I have been taking a staycation this week.

I’m just glad I had to work Saturday night, so I saw the email, which was sent Friday at about 10 pm. I would not have been pleased if I had done my usual Monday morning pre-work routine, just to find out that I wasn’t working that day.

I don’t mind taking time off, even though it’s not paid. When I was a regular employee, I never took all the time available to me, so now that no paid time off is “available,” it really doesn’t make a difference.

Project Runway Season 9: Therapy Not Included

Hi there. Are you centered? Are you grounded? Let’s do a few deep breaths, and get into our me-space.

This week on Project Runway, also known as Amateur Therapy Hour, we saw so many emotions, didn’t we? So many emotions, all mixed up in a big old stew of crazy. You need a tissue? Here, take the box. Looks like our remaining sewtestants were divided into two groups in some sort of daisy-chain selection method, where each person selected then turns around and selects the next team member. Very John Dewey, wouldn’t you say?

Michigan Cuts Entitlements to Thousands of Residents


On September 6, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R) signed into law a four-year lifetime limit on cash welfare benefits. Yep, that means exactly what you might think. Someone who qualifies for and receives welfare benefits has four years, and then they’re done. Now, here comes the really interesting part. Benefits will begin to be phased out on October 1. Yep, in a few weeks, people who have been receiving welfare benefits will be ineligible for any future cash welfare benefits. Continue reading →

Don’t Read It, Steal It

Oh, what to do when you need extra cash and your job won’t give you any overtime? The Chicago Tribune and The Daily Herald report that a suburban Chicago man thought of a get-rich-quick scheme that might never have occurred to you and me, dear reader.

Forty-three year old James F. Jackson of Glen Ellyn, Illinois had the brilliant idea of stealing rare and expensive books from area libraries, and then selling them on the Internet. He was arrested Monday morning after a four-month long investigation into reports from area libraries that reference books had gone missing. Lisle Police Commander Ron Wilke said: “He [Jackson] was looking for expensive books that would cost a library a lot of money.” Continue reading →

Dancing With The Stars Season 13 Cast Announced Tonight

That creaking, clanking sound you hear is the drawbridge being lowered down over the moat of fire and damned right-wing souls, a drawbridge you can safely cross to enter the fantasy realm that is Dancing With The Stars.

At the end of tonight’s episode of “Bachelor Pad” (which is what, exactly? I’m afraid I’m a bit addled from spending too much time on the Lady Parts Network, and anything pad-related just sounds overly hygienic) Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke will reveal just who they’ve roped into putting on the sequins and heels, and whatever the ladies are wearing too.

Project Runway Season 9: Just Drop Dead, Will You?
