Colorado Legislator Connects Fried Chicken to Black Race Demise, Old Stereotype Still Has Pulse

Oh, that’s just what we all need. A Republican (naturally) Colorado state senator who praises all that scrumptious, finger lickin good barbecue and chicken but only to the extent that it kills the black race. What a pity that all those dangblasted grease eaters are taken out by luscious, innocuous Hallelujah chicken that’s completely safe when put in the hands of white people! And if it isn’t the sickle-cell anemia and diaUHBEETUS sent to reduce the black race to rubble, just like racist spirit guide and bigoted butter-rich cage fighter, Paula Deen, would say, then apparently it’s the chicken. Recipe Sunday: Highbrow/Lowbrow Spicy Saffron Chicken with Turmeric Rice

Okay, so the title of this post is a little misleading, because turmeric isn’t really “lowbrow.” But for years I’ve thought of it as “saffron coloring for the fiscally challenged.” I love to use it in rice because it makes it so bright and cheerful for pennies a batch. I’ve been hoarding it because…well, it’s the most expensive spice in the world. Continue reading

Recipe Sunday Monday: Chicken-Lemon Soup (Avgolemono)

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 8 cups chicken stock, preferably homemade, if not, low sodium
  • 1 cup orzo pasta, or rice
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • Juice of 3 lemons (approx. ½ cup of lemon juice)
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Shredded or chopped left-over cooked chicken (optional)

Bring stock to a boil and add orzo or rice. Simmer until tender, about 20 minutes. (Orzo is faster than rice). Season stock to taste with salt, if necessary. Continue reading

Recipe Sunday: Herb-Crusted Rib Roast

Yummy Rib RoastLast Wednesday, my in-laws were in town and my mother-in-law volunteered to make this recipe she had recently seen in the newspaper. It was so nice not to have to worry about feeding my guests for dinner, and it turns out that this easy-to-make recipe is also incredibly delicious. I can’t wait to try the mustard-panko crust on a pork tenderloin or chicken drumsticks. Continue reading
