Recipe Tuesday: Broccolini and Cheddar

broccolinicheddarWe recently had a chance to try a great local restaurant called Scratch, a “modern American tapas restaurant”. The menu changes based on the availability of ingredients, and Executive Chef Dustin Haney manages to create amazing small plates out of a handful of ingredients. If you are ever in the Winter Park, Florida area, you should stop by, but be aware that they don’t take reservations and the location is tiny, so your best bet is to get there at around 6pm on a weekday, sit a the bar, and have a slow-paced dinner. Views of Three Southernmost Points

big_island_2007As an unorthodox traveler, I, by default, choose unorthodox destinations. Here are three.

1. Southernmost point of the 50 United States.  Ka Lae (South Point), Big Island of Hawaii.

Subjectively, this is the most fascinating of the three. A 12-mile roughly paved road leads you from the main ring road that hugs the circumference of the Big Island to South Point. It is very windy, as evidenced by the funny looking trees; the huge, rusting windmills; and well, the wind. Once in a while, cattle will randomly appear. Continue reading

Florida Drug Tests Welfare Recipients, Loses Money

The prevailing conservative assumption is that most welfare recipients are drug addicts who get their check and proceed to smoke, snort, or shoot up the money they’ve scammed from good, hard-working Americans. This theory took a hit when the ACLU of Florida released documentation they obtained from the state showing that the program actually cost Florida taxpayers a net $45,780 in a four month period. During this time, 108 of 4,086, or 2.6%, of applicants failed the drug test, and because the law requires the state to reimburse those who pass the test, they actually paid out more than they saved. The law also failed to deter people from seeking assistance in the first place. The report indicated that caseloads from July to September 2011 were not dramatically reduced. Continue reading

Arizona Still Has Nothing on Florida’s Brand of Crazy

Living in Florida is, how do I put this, interesting. On the one hand, I am 45 minutes away from the beach (Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean), I have access to tons of lakes, and there are tons of Latinos (my people!). On the other hand, you have Casey Anthony, the astronaut lady that drove for over 24 hours with an adult diaper on, and Rick Scott.

Rick Scott, our esteemed governor, has a 29% approval rating. He’s been in office for less than a year, and in his short tenure has cost the state over 100,000 jobs, high-speed rail funding, and any attempt to rein in urban sprawl.

Since Mr. Scott is so unpopular, I guess he’s been feeling lonely and unloved. So what did he do? He posted a letter on his website that you can copy/paste and send to the editors of your major (or hometown) newspapers, telling them what a swell guy Rick is. Continue reading
