President Obama Speaks About the Trayvon Martin Case

This morning President Obama gave his first official statement about the Trayvon Martin case.

While he didn’t want to get into specifics about the impending legal matter for obvious reasons, he did acknowledge the Justice Department’s involvement, and in a moving fashion, spoke candidly about his own feelings, that as a father, and to offer a few words about Trayvon’s parents who are tirelessly fighting the battle for justice.

His exact words:

“If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.”

He was adamant about the need for all of us to understand what happened that night. He expressed sympathy, but mostly there was a bit of determination in his sentiments that there would be a continued investigation into the death of the seventeen year old boy who was gunned down while holding only a bag of Skittles and an iced tea. To the parents he said, “I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and are going to get to the bottom of what happened.”

“When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids. I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this.”

There is nothing about this that doesn’t make perfect sense, and more to the point, hopefully it is a comfort to Trayvon’s family, and the world watching at large, that the President of the United States of America is behind them, and wants the matter given the attention it rightly deserves.
