It’s Time to Abolish the Bachelor’s Degree

Last week Congress finally passed legislation that prevented the interest rates on federal student loans from doubling to 6.8%. While this move was welcome by college students and their parents, it does little to stem the skyrocketing debt that student loans are creating for Americans. Neither will increasing Pell Grants, increasing funding for state universities, or having a student loan debt strike. Our higher education system problems are structural, and the only way to fix this problem is change the entire structure of higher education. The first thing we need to do is abandon the standard bachelor’s degree. Continue reading

This Week in Assholes

Well it has been another busy week for the world’s assholes. Don’t these people ever take a damn vacation? I guess not, so let’s get started.

Our first asshole actually technically commenced with their douchebaggery last week, but the fallout and fail has continued into this week. Let’s give a nod to comedian (?) Daniel Tosh, who suggested that a female heckler at a California show should be gang-raped by other audience members. What a fucking prick. Of course he followed this by the customary non-apology on Twitter.

Ah, the dead baby defense. Genius, Dude. Tosh doesn’t even really understand what the issue is because on top of being an asshole he is also a complete moron. He also can’t seem to see the difference between making a rape joke and suggesting that his audience members rape somebody. Suggesting that humor can be used to deal with dark and unpleasant topics is irrelevant in this case because Tosh is too shitty of a comedian to think that much about his art anyway. Disgraced Rhode Island State Legislator Harnesses Power of the Internet to Act Like 14 Year Old Boy

Yesterday this writer was on Twitter when I saw a tweet from Rhode Island state legislator Dan Gordon (R-71) about the US House vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Admittedly, I was cranky, and after a day of reading bad economic news I felt a little fed up with the GOP’s continued bitching about the health care bill when Americans need some real leadership. I shot back a cranky response.

NYPD Caught Exaggerating Anti-Terrorism Victories

Last month The Daily Beast published a a profile of New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. The report slavishly praised Kelly for his anti-terrorism track record and for the city’s success in stopping terrorist plots. The article also repeated the often-cited claim that since 9/11 the NYPD has foiled 14 separate deadly plots against New Yorkers. There is only one problem with this claim. It isn’t true. Charles and Tara Carreon Drop the Lawsuits But Turn up the Crazy

By now most of you are familiar with the internet dispute between TheOatmeal.com creator Matt Inman and FunnyJunk.com lawyer Charles Carreon. I won’t rehash the whole episode here, but you can find a good recap at Arstechnica.com. Last week Carreon dropped his defamation suit against Inman, but apparently his internet campaign is just beginning. Continue reading
