This Week in Assholes

Well here we go again. There is nothing like an event geared at fostering peace and understanding to bring out the assholes. Welcome to our Olympic edition. The games only started Friday, but we already have several gold medal winners.

Let’s start with this week’s big contender: Mitt Romney. Willard decided to capitalize on his own past Olympic glory by stopping by the games in London and explaining to the Brits how the Olympics are done. First, a little racism, a little geographic ignorance,  finished off with some straight condescension. Now that’s diplomacy. I am sure he will bring the same charm to Israel.

Next up is the IOC itself, which again refused to grant a request from world leaders to have a moment of silence for the Israeli victims of the terror attack at the 1972 Olympics. 11 athletes in coaches were killed in Munich and there has never been a commemoration for them at any of the subsequent games. The Israelis (as well as leaders of several other nations) are simply asking for one moment of silence. The IOC’s refusal is simply baffling.

This week’s big winner though was NBC for its awful opening night coverage of the games. NBC managed to find an insulting tidbit for nearly every country in the world. Bob Costas managed to resurrect both Idi Amin and Kim Jong-il. He also managed to voice doubts about Egypt’s transition to democracy, discuss sanctions against Iran, and completely ignore Saudi Arabia’s first women athletes. Jesus, what a douche. NBC also decided to cut out a moving tribute to the London victims of the 7/7 terror attacks. America, we will be very lucky if the British are even still talking to us by the end of the games.

Know someone who is such an asshole that they deserve to be recognized. Send them to me at [email protected].
