Reality television has exposed many parts of the world that were previously hidden or unknown to society at large. “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” revealed the lifestyle of the English and Irish gypsy culture. The show ostensibly focused on the outrageous fashions that gypsies often chose for their weddings. The series also showed many realities and misconceptions about gypsy. It also exposed the prejudices that gypsies face in everyday life. I was unaware that they faced such deep, ingrained prejudice on a day to day basis. Continue reading

She’s been living with us for two years and we do love her. She’s about nine. The dog is not trained in any sense of the word. She was my mother’s most spoiled child. I also suspect that she is not that bright. But we love her and she gets plenty of attention. I cannot be even slightly mean to this dog because I am convinced my mom will haunt me. I feel generally good about her life because she loves my husband so much. It is one of the great love affairs of our time. Continue reading
After reading about TS’ dramatic (and thankfully resolved) struggle, it is time to admit mine.
I have never been to New York.
I am afraid to go now because I know what will happen. I will realize it is where I have always belonged and then I will weep. What is your shame? Confess it now. Continue reading
Ah, annoying parents. We are everywhere and we often forget that the world does not revolve around our special snowflakes. We can drive even the most tolerant among us to drink. To even the playing field, I will let you in on a secret: It is ridiculously easy to get revenge on us. You just have to know a few secrets. I will tell you a few in the hopes that you are more tolerant of me the next time I start yapping about how precious my snowflakes are. Continue reading
I am a well-known crazy aficionado. My husband calls me a “crazy anthropologist”. I love to get close to crazy people and study them like a scientist. It’s a little hobby of mine. It’s pretty safe to say that I am well-versed in various kinds of crazy. Usually, I have to go looking for the crazy, but yesterday, God gave me a gift in the form of one of the biggest loons I’ve ever met. I was sitting at my son’s soccer practice, listening to some people yammer about building a deck when all of a sudden, this woman burst on the scene with her three children. One ran onto the field because he was late for practice. Continue reading
Occasionally, I listen to Focus on the Family’s radio station when I’m afraid of nodding off in the car. It always wakes me up. One of my favorite Focus Friends™ is Nancy Leigh Demoss. Her “Revive Our Hearts” ministry is some of the most fascinating radio around. The ministry is targeted towards women and she also writes books. Her approach to womanhood is refreshing in a world where women are being selfish because of Satan. Nancy believes that women are being influenced to abandon their traditional roles. Her book “Lies Women Believe” is a favorite among bible study groups. Women are exposed to many, many lies by the media and Satan is in charge of many of these lies. She is fond of saying things like “When you recognize that you’re exchanging or blurring your distinct feminine design, role, or calling—repent.” Continue reading
When I was pregnant and people asked me what we were going to name the baby, we used to say “Nimrod Funk.”
We got the name from my husband’s family tree. There was an actual Nimrod Funk in his family. For some unknown reason, the name was not handed down. But when people asked, we’d persist with “Nimrod”. After all, it’s a biblical name and it’s his heritage. How can that be the wrong choice? Continue reading
What is in the mind of the modern female? It’s a question on many people’s mind and fortunately, we have xoJane to turn to for detailed information on the female experience. This is the website’s tagline: “xoJane.com is where women go when they are being selfish, and where their selfishness is applauded.” Evidently, the modern woman has selfishness issues. Thankfully, they have a website to turn to.
It Happened to Me is xoJane’s way of getting readers to contribute their personal stories, much like our own Bots’ “I am a Hot Tub Rash Survivor.” The series is a good idea and many women out there have compelling stories to tell. There must be many stories of survival of abuse, overcoming obstacles and achieving seemingly impossible goals. xoJane is gathering them all. Continue reading
