I know that everyone is just about bored with this meme, but I was thinking about stuff we say that no one else says. For example, after yesterday, I say “Never trust a ginger”. I thought this might be a fun game. What do we say that no one else says? Continue reading

Eating the placenta is all the rage these days among a certain crowd. Yes, really. Why? Many animals eat the placenta after the birth, including goats. The placenta contains prostaglandin, which helps the uterus return to its normal state. It also contains oxytocin, which stimulates milk production and soothes the stress of labor. There have been no scientific studies, but research is often behind the curve. Human placenta is also a common ingredient in Chinese medications. Continue reading
One of the questions I constantly ask myself, as a parent, is “How can I make my job harder?”
One of the least appealing traits of babies is their perpetual incontinence. Yes, they are very cute and cuddly but there’s no getting around the fact that they pee and poop everywhere without consideration. They all do it, even the perfect-looking ones. Baby excrement is a problem that affects everyone. Continue reading
We had a good time, once upon a time, playing the Smug Parenting Game. How about a rematch? Here are some additional scoring parameters: Continue reading
Unschooling is a movement that gathered steam from dissatisfaction with the public school system. It is not to be confused with homeschooling, which is another movement entirely. Homeschooling is popular with both very conservative Christians who want to shield their children from the demonic influence of secular humanism and some more liberal people who want to take a more active role in their children’s education. It’s also filled a gap for children who struggle socially and don’t have alternative schooling options that are available in some areas. Continue reading
The recession has gone on long enough that it’s likely to have a long-term effect on people’s buying and spending behaviors. We may find that when we are old and gray (if we’re not already), that we are just as frugal as our grandparents used to be. I used to have lots of fun laughing at my crazy Depression-era grandparents who had 13 toasters in the garage because they saved everything for parts. However, considering the budgeting I’m doing these days, my grandchildren are probably going to have some good laughs at Grandma BBQ’s expense. By then, they’ll probably make disposable computers and they’ll all make fun of me for hoarding laptops. Continue reading
I was bullied horribly and it was terrible. It’s not something I talk about. I turn forty this month and I still have not talked about this to anyone other than my mother and sister. My mother’s gone and my sister generously does not bring it up. I buried it in the back of my mind and deliberately didn’t think of it until I had children of my own and watched the social game begin. Continue reading
I was a late in life child for my parents. So, I grew up as possibly the only Generation x person with a father who fought in World War II. Also, both of my parents lived through the Great Depression. That meant that they and my grandparents knew how to save a nickel. Also, my parents were pretty poor so we had a whole bunch of frugal habits. Continue reading
I’m about ready to pack my bags and join the Occupy Wall Street protests because it is hitting home now. Yeah, I got laid off a couple of years ago and my unemployment ran out ages ago. Whatever. Today was the day I began to weep for America. No matter that large companies are failing right and left – today, Casa Bonita, a Denver cultural icon, is in jeopardy. The parent company has filed for bankruptcy protection. I know this will devastate scores of Denver residents, most of all my brother-in-law John. Seldom has a man loved a restaurant as much as John loves Casa Bonita. Continue reading
Once upon a time, Mr Cornnuts and I went to a trendy Italian restaurant. My husband, a lover of anchovies, ordered a martini with an anchovy-stuffed olive. He took a few sips and the waiter came by to ask him how he liked it. Continue reading
