Weird Frugal Habits

I was a late in life child for my parents. So, I grew up as possibly the only Generation x person with a father who fought in World War II. Also, both of my parents lived through the Great Depression. That meant that they and my grandparents knew how to save a nickel. Also, my parents were pretty poor so we had a whole bunch of frugal habits.

Since the economy is in the toilet, I figured we might be able to share some frugal habits. I have my own little list that I will share in exchange for yours. Some of mine are ridiculous so feel free to mock me.

  • I only use half a dryer sheet.(I’m pretty sure this saves me $3.15 a year).
  • I love free samples. I hoard  bottles of “Conditioning Shampoo” from Motel 6.
  • When I use steel wool, I put it in the freezer afterwards because it lasts longer that way.
  • I go to the library constantly. If they ever close down public libraries, I will probably panic.
  • I almost always go to matinee movies and bring my own candy. I still buy the theatre’s popcorn, though. That smell breaks me down every time.
  • I always buy store brand cereal unless there is a crazy sale.
  • I don’t buy much “kid” stuff. They wear second hand clothes and they get waaay too many gifts.  We have a second-hand crib, high chair, etc.  I am convinced there are very few baby things that you should pay full price for.
  • I drive stick shift because the cars are cheaper.
  • I color my own hair (I know this is considered a sin by hairdressers).
  • I know far too many recipes that involve ground beef.
  • I don’t buy birthday cards because I think greeting cards are a waste of money. I still buy presents, though.

Okay, it’s your turn. What are your weird frugal habits? Do you eat the noodles your children spit out at Noodles & Co.? Do you wear the same underwear for days at a time? I am looking for some new ideas.
