No Pity For Jerry Lewis

For those of us who remember life before cable TV, Labor day weekend always meant one thing:  Jerry Lewis on every damn channel raising money for ‘his kids’.  This year, the veteran entertainer for the first time in decades will not be running the iconic telethon and has been ousted as National Chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), a post he held for over 60 years.  Over the years, Lewis’ telethon raised over 2.5  billion dollars for the MDA.  Many people have hailed Lewis as a hero for ‘his kids’, and there has been consternation and sympathy for Lewis over this move. Why You Should Read Open by Andre Agassi

Now that this year’s US Open is underway, I thought it would be a good idea to recognize one of the sport’s greatest figures, Andre Agassi, and encourage you to pick up his book, Open. In it, he offers a deeply honest and painful account of his struggles with his difficult relationship with his father, with hating a sport for which he was unnaturally gifted, and with himself.

The book starts off during his second to last match against Greek player Marcos Baghdatis at the US Open in 2006. At 36 years of age, it is at this point of his life that he has all but succumbed to the blinding pain in his back due to sciatica, a vertebral displacement condition called spondyloisthesis and a bone spur. He recounts the sheer effort and will it took to get out there and push past the pain to eventually win the match. He was (and still is) a fighter, just like his father. Continue reading

How to Avoid Being Killed by a Hippo

This is NOT a man and a hippo doing a reenactment of a cartoon chase. It's an experienced park ranger, who narrowly avoided getting killed by the hippo by sprinting over a hundred yards.

Hippopotamuses are adorably pudgy, strict herbivores and kill more humans than any other African animal.  You cannot outrun them; they’ve been clocked at 30-40km/h (19-25mph). You cannot outswim them; on average, hippos can swim 8 km/h (5 mph). And, you certainly cannot fend them off; the average weight of an adult female is 2,900–3,300 lbs., a male 3,300–4,000 lbs., and older males can reach 7,100—9,900 lbs. (Eltringham, 1999).  Yo hippo’s SO FAT not even Dora could explore her. Need I mention that the bite force of an adult female hippo is 1,821 lbsf (Barr, 2008)?  Continue reading
