I recently started shopping at my local fish market (Lombardi’s, HOLLA!) and was amazed at the variety compared to the grocery store, and at a similar price point. The best part about shopping at Lombardi’s is that they have corvina. For those of you not familiar with it, corvina is a mild white saltwater fish, and it’s mainly consumed in Latin America. For most of the year, we Midwesterners are stuck with vegetables grown somewhere down south and picked before they’re really ripe. Then they get trucked up here, artfully arranged in the supermarket and finally make it to our kitchens, where they taste… like nothing. Continue reading
I may have shared this with you all before, but one of my cousins is basically living my dream life: she has her own successful catering business, owns a small gourmet shop, has her own cooking magazine, her own TV show, cookbooks… you name it, she owns it. From the time we were little kids, she was always bringing something delicious to our family gatherings. Today I am sharing her recipe for a quick and easy salad dressing. Continue reading
I’ve been obsessed with Greek yogurt lately. Maybe it’s because I tend to root for the underdog (you have to admit the Greeks are going through a rough time right now) or maybe it’s because this yogurt is the perfect substitute for sour cream. Also, Greek yogurt makes the base for an incredible marinade. So, the other day when I had a large container of yogurt that I was trying to finish, I decided to make some spicy chicken kabobs – and I was extremely dedicated to the kabob idea. Continue reading
What is your favorite dessert? I have many, but one thing they all have in common is the presence of chocolate. Feel free to make the cake batter from scratch, but if you are lazy like me, you can use Betty Crocker’s chocolate fudge cake mix. Mmm, my mouth is watering just thinking about this cake! There’s something so simple and satisfying about scallion pancakes. These staples of Chinese restaurants aren’t difficult to make at home (although there are a few simple techniques that help them to be soft and flaky) and they are incredibly delicious. Scallion pancakes also only require one “expensive” ingredient – sesame oil. You can find a bottle of that for three to nine dollars – and it will last you for at least a year, even if you use it regularly. Continue reading
Sometimes you feel like spending all afternoon in the kitchen whipping up something delectable. Other times, you come home from work exhausted and all you want is to make something quick that’s still tasty. I like this recipe because it only has a few ingredients, it’s quick to make, and it’s pretty cheap. Continue reading
A few weeks ago I was looking through the Epicurious app (this app is awesome, you must get it!) trying to find a Turkish-style chicken recipe. This recipe caught my eye because of the yogurt marinade. However, I have no idea what Aleppo peppers are, so I decided to substitute Chipotle powder instead. What a hit. Continue reading
There are a lot of feelings around the Internet about Giada DeLaurentiis, but in my house she can do no wrong. We are big fans of her recipes, but particularly these quick and yummy eggs for breakfast. The original recipe can be found here, but I’ve made a few modifications over the years to create what we call Giada Eggs. Serves two. Continue reading
Greetings, chickadees! I know you’ve been eagerly waiting for the results of our Crasserole Contest.
