Listen to This: Daft Punk’s “Drive”

Back in August I linked in one of the OTs to a story on Pitchfork about a long lost Daft Punk song that had been discovered. Initially intended to be released with “Rollin’ and Scratchin'” as Soma25, “Drive” wound being shelved in favor of the Daft Punk’s now classic tune, “Da Funk.” That was 1994. Flash forward to present day, and the long forgotten song was rediscovered as Soma was compiling its three disc Soma Records 20 Years retrospective. “Drive” is the first track on the Classics disc. Listen to the song after the jump. Continue reading

Ten Treasures of Bubblegum Rock

I love hard music. Even when I was a little kid I favored loud drums and screaming guitars over sweet melodies and pretty words. As a teen I listened to MDC, The Circle Jerks, and the Dead Kennedys. As an adult I played the drums in a few bands and wrote songs full of angry, obscene words about shooting people in the face.

However, even the hardest of rockers sometimes need a little sweetness. I have a fairly large collection of sweet R&B ballads, weepy indie rock selections, and even a few soothing classical pieces to connect me to the more graceful side of music. This is all justifiable in the name of eclectic taste. However, there is no amount of rationalization that can really ever erase my shame over my absolute adoration of bubblegum rock. Sure, her hits aren’t the stuff of legends but they did chart in the late eighties and early nineties. Most people that know of Basia are males in their mid-late fifties so if you are outside of this age range, then consider yourself blessed. Here are a few of her hits for your listening pleasure:

Bush in the Afterlife

British band Bush played the Congress Theater in Chicago on August 18 as part of a series of warm-up dates for the world tour they will start in October. It was a free show that had two lines (priority ticket holders and “regular” ticket holders) spanning nearly a mile on Chicago city blocks. This was a free concert sponsored by Samsung and AT&T as part of their Summer Krush series. The priority ticket holders were told to arrive at the venue a half hour before the doors opened to guarantee entry. Not only did they get guaranteed admission, but they were also treated to an hour of a hype man selling the crowd on AT&T and Samsung products. Someone won a phone and someone else won a guitar. Not sure what the guitar winner was supposed to do with a guitar at the beginning of a concert, but that was his problem. Continue reading
