This Labor Day Weekend: Five Films About (Not) Working in America

America doesn’t officially celebrate International Workers’ Day with the rest of the world on May 1. Instead Americans need their own fancy Labor Day. Though it tends not to be celebrated in the same spirit as International Workers’ Day, just play along with me, okay? If you don’t spend the weekend barbecuing, sun-cooking your flesh or laying face down in a puddle of your own sick, you could get into the Labor Day spirit by watching some work(er)-themed films!

Top Five: 30 Rock Guest Stars

The sitcom celebrity guest star has a history nearly as old as the sitcom itself. On I Love Lucy, the redhead famously pied William Holden in the face at the Brown Derby and caused trouble for several other bold names during the Ricardos’ stay in Tinseltown. Today the celebrity guest star is synonymous with low ratings, viewed as a desperate attempt by a show to draw in viewers. Of course ratings play a large role in the decision to bring big name actors on as guest stars, but every show should pay careful attention to how successful 30 Rock has been at making the most of its guest stars. Five Films to Watch With(out) Mom this Mother’s Day Weekend

I was writing out my Mother’s Day card, and suddenly I was thinking back to Mother’s Day 2004. That year, I took mom to see Kill Bill: Vol. 2 at the movie theater. She loved it (she had already seen and enjoyed Vol. 1). My mother’s taste in movies is probably not typical for a lady her age–she has adventurous taste. Though not his first project, The House of the Devil hit a sweet spot: film nerds and critics loved his movie, but so did genre aficionados. West beautifully crafted a picture that paid homage to the Satanic Panic flicks of the 80s while also establishing a knack for building tension and dread with slow-burn storytelling and a clear directorial point-of-view.

Fast forward to 2011: West’s new film, The Innkeepers, is currently available on-demand through your cable provider or Amazon Instant Video. Though his new feature finds him in familiar territory (limited setting, small cast), The Innkeepers stands on its own merits. Continue reading

Movie Review: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Historically, when a female character takes on the role of hero–especially that of action hero–her motivation is singularly feminine: to protect her young. Whether it’s Ellen Ripley shouting, “Get away from her you bitch!” to divert an alien’s attention from her surrogate daughter or Beatrix Kiddo embarking on a bloody revenge odyssey to punish those who robbed her of her unborn child, women are generally only allowed to take on a traditionally masculine role when there’s a feminine motivation to offset it.
