Which Insane Fan Base Did Vulture Forget?

wildlings!

So Vulture compiled its thoroughly entertaining listicle of the Top 25 Most Devoted Fan Bases this week. It was a pretty simple exercise: A bunch of bloggers came up with a ranking of the bands, movies and other assorted Hollywood crap that have the most fanatical followings.

We wouldn’t be a true internet hate-blog if we didn’t spend our time picking it apart and pointing out its glaring omissions. Continue reading

The Career of Ray Lewis, in Gif Form

Put down your can of Natty Boh and stop saying “hon” for two seconds, Baltimore fans, because I have something to tell you: National Bohemian is a shitty fucking beer. It just is.

Also, it looks like Ray Lewis tore his triceps on Sunday. His season is over and this may very well be the end of a legendary 17-year-career. So instead of making fun of that ridiculous goddamn Dundalk accent that all Baltimorons speak with, let’s take a trip down memory lane and re-live the career of Ray Lewis — a football story as surreal and over-the-top as any John Waters movie.  Continue reading

Richard Lawson Defends Adrian Chen’s Troll-Exposing Article About Reddit

Richard Lawson Defends Adrian Chen, Explains Why Anonymity is Not An Absolute Right

On Friday Gawker’s Adrian Chen dropped his much-anticipated article exposing the IRL identity of star Reddit troll “Violentacrez.” The article raised some interesting questions about how Reddit is managed and its close ties to some unseemly characters. But even more interesting is the debate it has ignited over whether internet users have a right to their own anonymity.

This is a a topic we’ve debated here before and it really is a subject worth discussing (especially since Crasstalkers rarely agree on anything). That’s why I particularly enjoyed the comment that former Gawker writer (and longtime Friend of Crasstalk) Richard Lawson posted in reply to Chen’s article FridayContinue reading

How To Make Your Online Map Directions Much, Much Cooler

Google Maps Directions in 3D

Some company that makes fancy fashion symbol cellular telephones made news this week for finally releasing its own mapping software, only 16 years after Mapquest first came out. People get excited about anything Apple does, but black-turtleneck brigade has nothing on Google’s Directions in 3D feature.

I know that sounds boring, but the name “Directions in 3D” doesn’t do it justice. Have you ever viewed the Tour de France and watched in awe as they show you those epic, swooping helicopter shots of the race course? It’s like that.

Crasstalk Gets a Baby Brother: Meet Crassparenting.com

Crassparenting.com kangaroo logoWhen I created Crasstalk.com on a whim one night late in 2010, I had no idea what it would become. All I knew was that we had an extended network of interesting people who all had a lot to say and wanted a new place to say it.

Ever since then, I’ve been continually amazed at just how important our authors, commenters and readers are to the growth of Crasstalk — and how important Crasstalk is to them.

Over the past year, The Grand Inquisitor, Dogs of War and I have spent a lot of time thinking about how we wanted to grow this amazing community. Our first goal was to put Crasstalk on a solid financial footing – those of you who donated to the site early made amazing contributions but that’s no way to run a website of this size. So we worked hard to drive enough revenue from advertising to support the site without detracting from the commenter experience. We’re certainly not getting rich anytime soon but we’re now earning enough revenue to keep the lights on and even have a little left over for development of new site features and new projects.  Continue reading
