Saturday DJ Party: GRiZ and I’m Not A Band

GriZ's Mad Liberation album cover

We’re gonna change things up a bit this week. Instead of an original mix, I’m giving you a bunch of tunes by GRiZ and I’m Not A Band, a couple of artists I’ve been diggin’ on lately.

First let’s talk about GRiZ. He’s a young producer– apparently a Detroit native who’s now a student at the University of Colorado — who has self-released his debut album “Mad Liberation.” His sound is an incredibly intricate mix of electro, funk and dubstep (it might even be what some people are starting to label “post-dubstep”).  You can download the entire album for free at GRiZ’s website. I love the album art, too.

Up next we have a Berlin-based band (actually a duo) I mentioned during last week’s DJ Party Mix — I’m Not A Band. They just released their album “BandBand” and I’m loving it. They combine classical violin with electronic music to create a glorious electro-pop sound. Usually when I hear that anyone is trying to combine classical music with modern electronic music, I expect the worst. In this case, though, Stephan Jung (the violinist) and Kassandra Papak (the singer) make it all work thanks to some very nice pop songwriting.
