Why I Watch Television I Hate

This week is the season finale of  Bunheads, an ABC Family confection set in a fantasy California idyll, about the teachers and students at a dance school. I will watch the episode. And I will watch it as I have watched all the prior episodes: with continuously rolled eyes and a simmering irritation that could result in a remote flying at the TV. Why? I’m hate-watching it. Along with a handful of other shows. Yes, I’m watching numerous television shows that I despise. And I’m not the only one. “Hate-watching” is a thing now; just last night my friend and I bonded over the fact that we’re both hate-watching The Newsroom, too. Let’s All Salute The United Bates of America

The Bates family are close friends of the world-famouse breeders the Duggars. They are also challenging the Duggar family for the Womb Productivity Crown and now they have a reality show on TLC. The Bates family appeared on 246 Kids and Counting a few times and they also had a special which aired a few months back. It must have gotten good ratings because they now have a spinoff called “The United Bates of America” which airs on Mondays on TLC. Continue reading

Lauca National Park in Chile

I take another break from my 4,000+ mile bus journey through South America to do some proper sightseeing. Today, I ride in a medium-sized tour bus from the coastal city of Arica, Chile, and visit the Andes mountains, right on the border with Bolivia. Lauca National Park is my destination. Its most iconic site is Lake Chungara, which is surrounded by snow-capped volcanoes.

All of the other passengers on the bus are Chilean and Brazilian tourists. Like Noah’s Ark, they all came in pairs. I am the exception, as I am doing this trip on my own. I will rendezvous with my wife at the bottom of the world, in Ushuaia, at the end of the bus trip. More on that later. Continue reading
