QOTD: School Is Out!

I don’t know about y’all, but I lived for summer vacation when I was a wee rhino living in northern and central NY. I had endless options; fishing, swimming, exploring the forests, reading under a tree, the possibilities seemed as endless as the summer. Today’s QOTD:

How did you while away your summers as a kid?

As soon as I finished my chicken coop duties, I threw a pair of shorts on over my bathing suit, strapped a fishing pole to my back, grabbed some sandwiches, and took off on my bicycle. I had to be home by dusk. At night I caught fireflies or played Ghost In The Graveyard and Kick the Can until I got called in or couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore, whichever came first.

Civil Rights Pioneer Dies

Clara Luper, organizer of sit-ins that resulted in desegregating 38 Katz Drug Stores across the Midwest, has died. In 1958, she lead 13 other black youth to sit-in at the all-white lunch counter in the Katz Drug Store in Oklahoma City. After two unsuccessful attempts, they were eventually served on their third effort. Ms. Luper continued her contributions to progress for blacks by working for the NAACP for many years. She was 88.

Inventing a New Game While Locked inside a Big Box Store

At the start of the economic downturn I was downsized at my newspaper job – and then I promptly panicked. I knew there were actual Mensa members who I was competing against for jobs and my self-confidence disappeared. I am smart enough to know that when I get scared I get dumb, but that didn’t stop me from taking the first job I was offered – wearing a name tag in a big box store.

And yes, it was as horrible as you imagine that it would be. Continue reading
