Recipe Sunday: A Cheddar Cheese Ball That’s Almost a Gift Itself

The secret arrow in my holiday quiver is this cheddar cheese ball. It’s simple to make, is incredibly addictive and can even make uneven gift giving seem on par. It’s kind of magical that way.

For instance, my cousin gave us a DVD player (with Wi-Fi!) as an early Christmas present. I was stunned by the gift, and giddy as a schoolgirl. But, I wasn’t prepared for a gift exchange the night before Thanksgiving. However I had made her a cheese ball as a surprise.

When I lamented the fact that the only thing I had for her was the cheese ball her face lit up.

“No, no this is awesome!Continue reading

A Sandwich for Liz Lemon

A couple of weeks ago when I first heard the news that Liz Lemon was getting married – and that guests were asked to bring their own snacks – I decided to make a meal that was fitting for the occasion. In fact, a friend of mine and I even decided to have a little party to celebrate. But, life intervened and we couldn’t get together, so I completely spaced my food plans.

Recipe Sunday: Pomegranate, Grapefruit, and Blueberry Salad in a Champagne Vinaigrette

Poor Demeter. Her daughter, Persephone, was taken by Hades and carried away to the underworld. Demeter was the goddess of agriculture and the earth withered as crops dried up because Demeter was only concerned with finding her daughter. The cries of the hungry forced Zeus to get involved, and he ordered Hades to release Persephone from the underworld and return her to her mother. Continue reading

Recipe Sunday: Hello Dolly Bars

One of the best things about Fall weather (even in hot-ass Florida) is that it feels “right” to start baking. Although it is not quite cool here yet, I find myself fantasizing about baking all sorts of pies, tarts, cakes, and cookies. I like this recipe because it is so easy to make, even on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and it only ties up the oven for about 30 minutes, which means the house won’t get unbearably hot. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find a good explanation for the name. Be warned, these bars are like crack. Continue reading

Recipe Sunday: Linguine Carbonara

Traditional carbonara consists of eggs, pancetta, black pepper, and grated cheese. This version is inspired by a family friend’s recipe. It is not a traditional carbonara since I like to add onions and just a touch of cream. However, I find it is very close to the real deal, and it’s not as creamy as you typically find at most Italian-American restaurants. Continue reading
