“How to Start a Conversation – America versus France” is written from the point of view of the character, Audrey Girard.


I am French. Not rude, French. Yes, there is a difference. As a psychologist, I can say with confidence the difference is almost always perception. Most of my patients come to me with a dramatic story of social isolation, or betrayal, or deception. While some of these patients certainly have actual mental illnesses, far more simply perceive something much too severely compared to what was intended. That is what we French think of your reactions to our culture, my dear Americans.

How Did the US and Canada End Up So Different?

Canada and the United States are in many respects two very similar countries. Founded as white colonial settler societies, both are now developed capitalist democracies, with functioning multi-party (more or less) politics. In some very important ways, though, Canada and the US are very different countries. The United States has developed a national attitude of rugged individualism, premised on distrust of government and the notion that everyone can succeed and climb through society if they work hard enough. Canada is much more communitarian, turning more to society as a whole, with an attitude of trust in, and deference to, government. Why is this? What made our two countries so similar yet so different?

French Magazines Ruining Everyone’s Week

Apparently the French have decided to wage war on PR reps and Kate Middleton’s boobs. All in a day’s work, eh? Haha? Well, okay that would be ascribing to a petty stereotype about the French being self-involved, ego-maniacal, loo-loo birds who go around slapping people, smoking cigarettes out of filters and reveling in the occasional bit of co-opted nudity.
