Building a Nuclear Reactor at Home is Illegal

Richard Handl is a Swedish man smart enough to obtain radioactive elements and attempt to assemble a nuclear reactor, but dumb enough to do so at home without a license from the regulatory agency in Sweden.  Needless to say they would have turned down his application.

It’s hard to believe that this doesn’t violate the Blogspot terms of service, but he ran a blog chronicling his adventures which involve obtaining radium, americium, thorium, uranium and other elements. You’ll also be shocked to learn, he even managed to have a little meltdown on his kitchen stove. Continue reading

What about Carnage?

Roman Polanski’s Carnage will have its world premiere at the 68th Venice Film Festival before making its North American premiere at the 49th New York Film Festival. The film is adapted from Yasmina Reza’s Tony-winning play, God of Carnage, which focuses on two couples who attempt to resolve their sons’ playground altercation only to engage in arguments of their own.

The limited setting and exploration of the darker side of human nature seem especially suited to Polanski’s sensibilities. Anticipation for the film has increased with the news that it would open NYFF. Read film critic Anthony Kaufman’s reaction here. Given the fact that the source material won a Tony and that both Polanski and three quarters of his principal cast are Oscar winners, is Carnage guaranteed to bring the goods? Regardless of awards, is Polanski’s body of work (and likewise, each actor’s) enough to suggest that Carnage will be a home run? Continue reading

Matt Damon Speaks Up For Teachers

What’s probably nice about being Matt Damon? Well, besides being rich and famous and married to Luciana Barroso?

Well, for starters, you get to lend a voice to causes you believe in, and people sometimes listen. Alternatively, a hack ‘journalist’ from a libertarian website like Reason.tv (sorry, I’m not even linking to them and giving them traffic) shoves a mic in your face, and you get to teach them a few big words:

Going Retro NBA with the 1992 Finals Game One

A big reason why I love basketball so much is growing up in the 90s in suburban Chicago under the magic of Michael Jordan and the Bulls. One of my first memories growing up is my dad coming home from Montgomery Ward with a brand new Mitsubishi 46-inch TV and watching Game 1 of the 1992 NBA Finals, or more commonly known as “The Shrug” game.

We start off with a reminder of just how spoiled people were in the 90s. The NBA on the NBC was the pinnacle of sports broadcasting and it’s kind of painful to think of how crappy it’s become. The theme music! Let John Tesh course through your veins. Continue reading

Wednesday Morning Headlines

Newt Gingrich may have a 92% fake following rate on Twitter or he may not, it doesn’t really matter. What I mean to say is that this isn’t something anyone should be worrying about, not even Newt Gingrich himself, the followee in question. But Newt did care. The sad, old man cared enough about his number of Twitter followers that he probably paid some company to juice his stats. He thought that that’s what mattered. Just like the rest of us, Newt was too concerned with checking his Twitter account instead of focusing on the important stuff. We also, of course, completely validated Newt’s initial concern over his number of followers by caring enough to unearth the fraud. So this proves that it’s the norm now to be addicted to the internet to the detriment of your own well being. That is the norm. Okay, here are your headlines.  Continue reading
