The Ideologies of Wizardchan Virgin9000

Wizardchan has boiled up to the surface of the Internet with the events happening at UCSB, though the two should not be confused for one another even though there is overlap. V9K is a sub forum, image board on the Wizardchan site that wizards use as a support group, chat forum and sounding board. The V9K sub forum is specifically for depression related topics. First a few definitions.

  • Wizard – A virgin at least 30 years old
  • Wizard Apprentice – A virgin under 30 who expects to become a wizard
  • NEET – Not in Education, Employment or Training
  • TFW – That feel when
  • Virgin – Someone who has not experienced any sexual act between two people. These acts include vaginal sex, oral sex and anal sex.
  • KV – Kissless virgin is someone who has never been kissed in addition to being a virgin as defined above.
  • Chad – Alpha men who get the affection and attention of women without trying.
  • Normalfag* – Non-wizard or wizard apprentice. These can be men and women and are simply the everyday people out in society oblivious to the plight of the wizard.
  • Succubus – Basically all women. Other terms are also used such as slut, whore or any other term one can imagine to degrade women.

*The heteronormativity is strong with this group and homophobia is rampant in the language. (Update) Though it has been pointed out that the use of “fag” is more of a chan slang than a V9K specific term and it is claimed to not be offensive, but means a person who belongs to a particular group.

The origin of the wizard comes from a Japanese interne meme:

If you pass the age of thirty as a virgin, you become a wizard.

At the heart of it are men who see themselves as untouchable and have indeed never been touched. Though there is also a part of the community who simply don’t want to be around people. The community is overflowing with people who suffer from severe clinical depression, social anxiety of the highest orders and goes well beyond simply being socially awkward or inept.

But at the core is also a belief system. The system says that succubi are attracted to Chads and Chads are therefore getting the women that the wizards would get if the Chads only had one woman. They see the world as divided into people who fall onto a scale from one to ten (obviously not unique to this group). The women only want to be with Chads no matter where the woman is on the scale. A female four will demand a Chad and not settle for a wizard who might also be a four. This practice is known as hypergamy.

The wizards have come up with some images to illustrate this and show how they see themselves as boxed out from the affection of women.

how_it_really_worksThis leaves an imbalance that puts the wizards in an unbreakable box. There is some small acknowledgement that women have problems too but the focus is on the wizard men. There is a prevalent belief that even the lowest ranking women can and do get men and is demonstrated by posting images of women they consider unattractive who have found a mate.

Of course it’s true that some guys have all the luck and women really do throw themselves at these guys. But in reality there just aren’t that many Brad Pitts or George Clooneys in the world, that’s where the view gets warped. For the above image to be accurate you’d need 1000 blue dudes and one Chad.

There’s also the idea that if only there were some sort of outside force that made the ones stick with the ones, and so on, that the wizards (self identified as being low numbers) would find mates because the women who were also their number would have no choice but to be with them.

sexual_freedomAgain, above there is the admission that women have problems in the same way, but it’s drastically minimized.

There is a sort of moral code in the group that speaking openly about depression is encouraged but exposing the group to any sexually suggestive words or images is frowned upon. They use a spoiler function to black out the text that would trigger someone. Suicide is also discussed openly and not looked down upon.

Another pattern that seems to exist but isn’t acknowledged is the idea that having a girlfriend or sex is something like a commodity. Nobody seems to understand why a girl would choose to be someone’s girlfriend, they just know that they don’t have it and they probably never will (for those that want that to begin with). The girlfriend commodity separates them from having to actually explore why they are in the situation they’re in, instead of just putting it on the unfairness of being born the way they were.

The desire by some to be a NEET and not have to face the world is strong among some and for people with depression and social anxiety is understandable. But to hate women for not choosing to bestow the girlfriend commodity upon them is where the disconnect comes. Of course, not everyone there hates women but as can be seen in the comments below, some really do. People choose to be with one another because they enjoy spending time with the other person and yet most of these wizards don’t want to even be around themselves or other people.

As a side note the community connects quite well with the Simpsons character Moe Szyslack and uses him as a reaction image with some regularity.

Update: The Chadmin has not been heard from, the paid up hosting has run out and the site has gone dark. But like an unloved Phoenix it has risen from the ashes over here.
