Gulag’s Heavy Metal Round-Up

Welcome one and all.  I finally decided to show a little initiative and come up with an actual post for the site, as opposed to the usual random snarky comments & YouTube videos that I am (not) famous for.  And to think, my high school guidance counselor said I wouldn’t amount to anything in life.  WHO’S LAUGHING NOW, MRS. DWYER?  I AM, BECAUSE THIS EPISODE OF ‘SANFORD & SON’ THAT I’M WATCHING IS HI-LARIOUS.  As you can see from the title above, today’s article will be about music.  Specifically, metal.  Now I realize a lot of you may not exactly be the biggest fans of the genre, but I hope that you will give the following songs at least one listen.  If you really like what you hear, I also have a music blog where I post albums daily, from all sorts of genres.  You can find the link for the site in my profile.

Crasstalk Music Share

Hello gang.  We talk a lot about music here and I found some real gems through the members of the Crasstalk community. We are a diverse bunch and that is reflected in the kinds of music we like. So today let’s do a little sharing (or oversharing, as is our way). What are your recommendations? What can’t you stop listening to? I’ll start off with a couple old school suggestions from a former rocker girl.

This is Visqueen a pop-punk, super band that formed from the members of Hafacat and The Fastbacks in 2001. Rachel Flotard, the lead singer is still rocking it out although the rest of the band line-up has changed over the years. This is pure, happy, music sugar and this song always makes me feel a little better about life. I defy you to listen to it and not smile.

This is Kinski. A sort of art/hard rock/punk band. They are all amazing musicians and they rarely clutter up their shit with lyrics about getting dumped or whatever. They frequently also do multi-media projects with other kinds of artists that are inevitably really cool. Also, Barrett Wilke is the best drummer, ever. I’m totally serious.

All right, that is enough to start us off. Show us your good stuff gang.

Tea Party Rock

Nothing says Rock and Roll like conservative America. Just ask The National Review. While you may not think of the county Republican meeting as a swaggering display of animal sexuality, it is that pro-freedom passion that makes conservatives rock. Just ask the Ted Nugent.

Now that is presidential!

So here is a collection of the best Rawk the Tea Party has to offer. Feel free to bookmark these videos so you will have something to watch when you hang out at you aunt’s house in Arizona next Christmas.

This chick has sort of a Laura Branigan thing going on. Unfortunately, no one told her that the use of the word accountability in a song sucks most of the rock right out. However, she does get points for dramatic lighting.

Here is a classic from the health care debate. Try to resist dancing in front of your computer.

This guy is really trying to rock in a sort of Mr. Mister sort of way. However, he really needs to rethink the Naziesque gray shirt combo, especially while bitching about the British. Don’t live the stereotype, dude!

Here is a low-fi treatment. This guy wants freedom like Lou Reed wanted junk. This is what happens when you bundle Garage Band and IMovie on new Macs.

OK, I can’t leave this without at least one country song. This is epic and contains stars and stripes burqas. Warning: The viewing of this video will make you afraid to ever visit The National Mall.
