Why You Should Read Open by Andre Agassi

Now that this year’s US Open is underway, I thought it would be a good idea to recognize one of the sport’s greatest figures, Andre Agassi, and encourage you to pick up his book, Open. In it, he offers a deeply honest and painful account of his struggles with his difficult relationship with his father, with hating a sport for which he was unnaturally gifted, and with himself.

The book starts off during his second to last match against Greek player Marcos Baghdatis at the US Open in 2006. At 36 years of age, it is at this point of his life that he has all but succumbed to the blinding pain in his back due to sciatica, a vertebral displacement condition called spondyloisthesis and a bone spur. He recounts the sheer effort and will it took to get out there and push past the pain to eventually win the match. He was (and still is) a fighter, just like his father. Continue reading

AT&T Sued for Trying to Gobble up T-Mobile

On Wednesday, the U.S. Justice department filed an anti-trust lawsuit against AT&T in order to block its intended merger with T-Mobile which, if allowed to proceed, would have made it the largest telecom in the known universe. The Justice Department claims that allowing the merger to go through would hinder competition, lower quality services and lead to higher prices for consumers (well, duh!). In a statement, AT&T said it was “surprised.” Continue reading

Where Would You Take Ferran Adrià for Dinner?

In the first scenes of the movie El Bulli: Cooking in Progress, Ferran Adrià, the master behind the famous Catalonian restaurant, is sucking on a fluorescent lollipop. Immersed in darkness, he opens his mouth and closes it, opens, then closes, each time exposing the inside of his mouth which glows with the same eerie light. The scene continues long enough that one is left wondering, what the hell is that? Adrià is considered to be one of the founding fathers of molecular gastronomy, using science to create modern works of haute cuisine art. So, one waits as if trying to find out how a magic trick is performed. The answer: proteins from a Japanese fluorescent fish.

Breaking a World Record

Last weekend I went on a small getaway to Washington DC to see a longtime friend, which I had been really looking forward to. I haven’t been to DC in ages! The only time I had ever gone was in the early 90’s and I don’t remember much besides the Lincoln Monument. This was basically going to be a whole new city for me. So, last Saturday I hopped on a cheap bus from NYC and I was off! Continue reading

The Best Wimbledon Final Ever

Being that I’m very excited that this is Wimbledon week (ok, 2nd week), I thought it would be fun to go back and revisit what is considered one of the greatest moments in tennis ever,…ever: The 1980 Wimbledon Men’s Singles final between John McEnroe and Björn Borg. In my book there might’ve been a few more but for today at least, this one is it and it is historical. Continue reading

Australian Screen Legend Bill Hunter Dies

(Credit: news.com.au)

Not being able to sleep tonight, I finally decided give in to Ambien now about 4:00am. So while I’m waiting for it to kick in, lo and behold I ran across an article in the BBC that the acting icon Bill Hunter had  lost his fight against cancer. It was extremely sad considering that if there was anyone that shouldn’t be raptured it shouldn’t have been him. I loved him as the dad in Muriel’s Wedding but even more so as the Australian Dancing Federation president in Strictly Ballroom. Those were my two favorites with him included but there have been so many more over his 50-year career including  Gallipoli and Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.
