Food photography is a pretty insidious hobby. It starts off innocently enough – you’ve just made a beautiful fruit salad with ingredients you received from friends, and you want to send them a photo of the finished product. Or you’ve just purchased a bounty of fresh vegetables at the farmer’s market and you want a photograph to remind you what gorgeous vegetables look like when everything in the winter produce aisle is dull and limp. Or maybe you are thinking about starting to take pictures of food. Where do you start? Continue reading

Roasted pears on a bed of cool greens with a lemon vinaigrette creates a salad that’s worthy of a champagne toast.

The crazy month of December is quickly coming to a head. Office parties, Christmas, Chanukah and New Year’s Eve are in our sights. And these are some of my favorite recipes to make for for parties or presents. None of them are too time consuming to make, and most of them are fairly inexpensive as well. Continue reading
Last weekend I bought a bag of almonds to start pre-gaming Christmas gifts. I thought that spiced almonds might be a fun thing to put in our friend’s food baskets. But I was out straight the last 2 days and I didn’t have a chance to practice with them. Then this evening I went out for a bottle of wine and when I was standing in line at the store, something caught my eye. Continue reading
Even though we are heading into the holiday season, let’s not get overwhelmed by good will. Some people deserve to be on Santa’s “naughty” list. In this case it’s Chick fil-A who’s going after Bo Muller-Moore, a Montpelier, VT tee-shirt maker for his website selling tee-shirts and bumper stickers with the slogan “Eat More Kale.” Chick fil-A insists Muller-Moore’s website eatmorekale.com conflicts with their website and slogan, eatmorchikin.com. Yay! It’s Thanksgiving week! To me Thanksgiving is the best holiday. There’s just food, libations and very little pressure. Sure you want the food to be delicious, but that’s as demanding as inviting friends or family over for dinner in general. And although there are staples that everyone expects, it’s fun to throw a curve ball in every once in awhile. In this case, the curve ball is making a staple much, much, better than the original. What constitutes a kitchen disaster? I racked my brain trying to define it. It has to be something funny but safe. A disaster should be one where no one gets seriously injured and you can laugh about it afterwards.
When we use the words “comfort food” we think of casseroles, soups, and bowls of cheesy noodles that stick to our ribs. But even as the days grow shorter and we brace ourselves for the cold, that just doesn’t fit the bill. Sometimes you need a spiced chicken breast on a salad with a tomatillo dressing. And sometimes you need it even when it happens by mistake. Continue reading
In the spirit of Occupy Wall Street, this recipe sticks it to the man – and it also embraces the conservative ideal of being self-sufficient. By making your own “condensed soup in a can” from scratch, you are saving $1.39 and not giving money to huge corporation. Wait, but that takes money out of the economy. Hmmm, that’s a conundrum. But, since we all need a full stomach to really consider big questions, why not make this old-fashioned chicken casserole while you ponder the question. Continue reading
Last week, Gawker had an article about women who are desperate to get married and have a fairytale wedding. I never wanted to get married, but then a strange circumstance nudged my husband and I toward city hall. Continue reading
