There you are, happily reading a book or watching a movie/tv show. You’re all caught up in the story, nicely distracted from the real world. But then, whammo, a hole in the plot jerks you out of the story and into a lengthy snarl of arguing with the writers in your head.
Do I need to insert a spoiler warning here?
Carrying on. Here’s my beef with the Buffy TV series, especially after Mum’s death. The Watchers have fancy offices in what looks like a nice part of London. They have valuable ancient tchotchkes galore. They can afford to run a lab to cook up slayer-power-defeating concoctions. So, lots of money at their disposal, and they want Buffy out there killing vampires.
And yet it never occurs to them that maybe they could PAY HER A SALARY so she doesn’t have to be working in fast-food chicken joints and serving customers in the Magic Box!
Similarly. Why does it never occur to any of the vampires to wear a hardshell cuirass, thus making it impossible for a wooden stake to get anywhere near their hearts? And a collar, so they can’t be beheaded?
What other stories are spoiled for you by big glaring flaws like this?
