Today the White House held a special news conference where Obama announced that the war in Iraq will officially end by the end of 2011.
Obama went on to state that, “the troops will be home in time for the holidays.” This must have been welcomed news for the families of the more than 39,000 troops still stationed in Iraq. It was further confirmed that the U.S. will leave a very small number of troops, 150, in the country, as opposed to the 5,000 initially speculated. This is due in-part to the fact that Iraq would not guarantee legal immunity for the troops.
While I’m sure this process may still see a few hiccups along the way, the agreement has allowed the POTUS to announce that the war is indeed over.
I, for one, could not be happier!
