Name the Sample: Funk Jammy Jams

New game. I’m posting youtube videos (for the audio) and you guys tell me what hip hop tunes have sampled them. Or, just turn the speakers up and listen to some back-of-the-crate rare grooves.

(Don’t be a jackass and cheat, and look at the youtube comments! Its like Blind Items on Gawker where people look up CDaN comments and post them slightly changed. THANKS GUYS! YOU’RE SO GOOD AT GUESSING!)

1.Tower Of Power – Ebony Jam, 1975. The intro specifically

2. Johnny Hammond – Gears, 1975. Mint copies of this 45 have been known to go for upwards of $500 on ebay.

3. Graham Central Station – The Jam, 1975.

4. Dizzy Gillespie – Matrix, 1970

5. David McCallum- The Edge, 1967 (Check out how whitebread this dude is!!!)

6. The Incredible Bongo Band- Apache, 1973 (OG pressings of this record go for a LOT of money. Its the craziest piece of vinyl you’ll ever have … the Bongo Band cover of “Inna godda da vida” will blow your mind!

7. Lightning Rod – Sport, 1973 (Side project of Kool & The Gang)

8. Banbarra – Shack Up, 1975

9. The Honey Drippers – Impeach the President, 1973

10. Liquid Liquid – Cavern, 1982 (After the first measure I want to yell “BASS!”)

So yeah, play along guys, if you don’t recognize the samples that’s okay cause these are really obscure records. Oftentimes the Intro, or a breakdown, a horn stab, a cool bassline, or a “YEAH” will be sampled … don’t worry if you don’t get them.

ROCK OUT. Have a nice Monday!
